I hate rude people who misuse their phones in public as much as anyone, but are we seriously proposing that vigilante killings are how we want to deal with that?

The guy was an entitled asshole.

(1) He thought he was entitled to text
(2) He threw a hissy fit after the manager was informed (How dare you call me out on my assholeness)
(3) He thought he could start throwing stuff at other people

Don't repeatedly be an asshole and start throwing stuff at people if you don't want to get shot. Seems reasonable.

I agree.

Based on what we know as fact, it's more likely that entitled rude asshole lost his mind over being asked to put his bright cellphone away. CCW guy went out, let the manager know, and it sounds like entitled asshole simply lost it after that.

It is early though, but yes.. Don't want shot, don't attack innocent people.

Don't like it? Don't get in to altercations with people asking you to quit being an asshole and put your phone away so others can enjoy the movie.

Dude you couldn't pay me to go to a movie theater. That is for the riff-raff of society. The home theater system I have setup in my house blows away by a country mile anything you will see in movie theater. I am a electrical engineer and home entertainment is the one area in my life that I splurge.

So.... you support the right to shoot people who are being assholes in public? Does this mean you are down with me gunning down gun right nutters who create nuisances by toting shotguns in grocery stores to prove the point that they have the right to keep and bear arms? Does this mean that there is an open season on Sarah Palin because she is basically an asshole everytime she is in public? Is this codified anywhere? Anybody that we perceive as an asshole, we are fully entitled to shoot?

When did America become Iraq? I suspect you would flourish much better in a 3rd world nation than here (unless you are all talk and no walk, in which case maybe not so much). You seem to have a strong aversion to civilization and an extreme attraction to guns and shooting people.

I'm starting to wonder if some of you guys even think a "bad shot" is possible. Every time someone gets killed it must have been out of reasonable self defense because it's inconceivable that anyone would ever shoot someone just because they lost their temper...

So why don't shoot the next guy who cuts you off on the highway? I mean, he could have caused an accident and killed you, right?

Seriously, you're the asshole. No one is defending the texter.

Old man goes and informs management that some entitled asshole won't turn off his phone, comes back, entitled asshole attacks him... Who is the victim here? It's way too early to place hard blame.

In many states that's legal, if it was intentional.

Moral of the story is the same... Don't attack random people and cause them to fear for their life and you won't have to worry about getting shot.

From the other thread:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/14/justice/florida-movie-theater-shooting/index.html

Charles Cummings and his adult son were two seats away. Cummings said that when Reeves returned to the theater, he didn't return with a manager. "He came back very irritated," Cummings recalled.

Witness says the shooter was very irritated. Ready for a confrontation.

I'm curious if the shooter had his gun the whole time, or got it from his car when the theatre manager wasn't available.

Lets see. Did the guy refuse to correct his behavior after being warned? Did he decide to pick a fight because I informed the authorities about his improper behavior. Did he then start throwing things at me?:hmm:

I have to wonder in cases like this what I'm going to be like when I'm that age.

Is it just the physical vulnerability of being old that skews your judgment or is this a result of mental decline (dementia?)?

Regardless he deserves everything he has coming. Nobody in their right mind would defend this as justified if the situation even resembles what has been presented in the news reports.

Simply tragic for both families.

One more thought:

This is why you don't escalate. Obviously throwing popcorn doesn't justify shooting him but at 43 you should fucking know better.

Yep just throw rule of law out the window and back to vigilante justice.
Chuck your gum down on the sidewalk? yep that's a shootin!

He's a former cop, don't forget that. A lifetime of training that anyone who confronts you at all is a legal shoot. Combine that with a sense of vulnerability and mental decline.

Justice is the shooter never sees the light of day again.

Given that he is an ex-cop, I am sure he will get some special attention from the convicts in prison.... if he ever goes to prison.

Now that I've seen pictures of the attractive middle class victim, I can't see how the cop gets away with it. The jury is going to identitify with the victim in this case. The shooter looks like a genuine piece of shit. He is old, ugly and very intimidating.... your typical bully.

Only if you refuse to clean it up when caught. Throw a fit when the person who catches you alerts the authorities. And then escalate the confrontation to start throwing projectiles at the person's face.

At which point he is free to stand his ground.

Also,

"“Somebody throws popcorn. I'm not sure who threw the popcorn. And then bang, he was shot,” said Cummings, a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, who wanted to see the movie as a birthday treat. His son, Alex, came along."

Anyone who seriously thinks that throwing popcorn at somebody constitutes as assault, any kind of attack with a weapon, or warranting a good shot needs to have their head checked.

Agreed. I'm seriously reconsidering the sanity of a few posters.

Don't forget, this happened in Florida.
