Floppy or Not

advice please
I am about to rebuild int new case ( lian li ) do I need to install the floppy drive or not ? as the one i have is a bit crudy.

Depends what OS you plan to run...Interesting Question I was planning on ditching mine also to make room for 2 more hard drives

i'd say you'd probably be able to get along with out it. i use mine next to never i only kept mine in my system cuz i have the antec 840 case w/ the bay and opening built right it....looks kinda gay with just a gaping hole there 😛
 
Chances are you will be able to get along without it but it makes jobs such as flashing the BIOS a little bit more difficult.

I personally have never built a PC without one. I have a zip drive which I think I can boot off but I've never tried, perhaps I'll give it a shot.

Boots off CD NP ditching the floppy unless you have periphials that have drivers on a floppy...just burn them on a CD

yes I agree about the bios flash ( but some are win based )

But then I could just hook one up just for that ( its not like you do it every week )

What have you got to gain by NOT including a floppy? They run off their own controller so you wont gain anything there and having to burn stuff to CD seems like too much trouble.

I guess if you have limited space in your case it might be worth excluding the floppy, otherwise I'd just keep one installed all the time.
 
I think he has a great idea of not installing one...look at my reasoning...I am planning on putting in a Soyo Dragon plus which has the ability to switch from Raid to a simple ATA 100/133 controller...so ditching the floppy would give me more room to mount drives 😀

room is not the problem , I like a clean look, its just the floppy is in a bad state, so if I put one in then I need to buy a new one ,for what once maybe twice a year use ?

In that case you are wise to ditch the floppy 😀

I have a cheap ECS board with no raid 🙁 and Lian Li case with about a million (perhaps not that many) spare 3½" drive bays 🙂 so ditching the floppy would not achieve anything for me.

I do have to agree though, floppie drives are a dying piece of hardware.

 
You do not necessarily need a floppy anymore and I do not install one in any PC's I build. I do however always keep one handy to flash a bios, etc. The decision is strictly individual.

The "clean look" is exactly why I do not install as customers usually would rather have USB ports in front, etc. If I absolutlely have to it is not a problem to pop the case open and install one real quick and get the stuff I need.
 
Consider a zip. Solves your BIOS flash issue if your mobo supports bootable zip. Useful if you have zips at work or whatever.
 
the problem is you never know when somebody is going to hand you a floppy... professors, co-workers, friends... you don't need it 99% of the time... but I always find myself popping one in every once in while.
 
o'dear things are getting complicated now .

who mentioned "work" ugg I don't do that any more 4 1/2 years unemployed ( BAS eng for one of the large banks ).

zip drives are not my best flavour of the month , more lost data than a little ( got a case of the click of death ) so that is NOT going to get into the new case.

the more you look into a problem the more difficult it becomes

anyway I have some time before the case ships , no del over weekend ( two golf comps to play anyway ) so it will be next week before the answer has to be found

OK, but just like you shouldn't use floppy to back up your data, you shouldn't use zip as your primary backup either. The technology is similar and has similar problems. I look at zip as a floppy replacement. Good for quick file transfers etc.
