Fleas in apartment...

The other day one of my roommates noticed his yorkie had fleas, this was unusual because in the 5 years he has owned the dog she has never had fleas. The only thing we could think of is the fact that we no longer live in a house, but an apartment complex with carpeted hallways and several other dogs. We started researching ways to get rid of the fleas in our apartment and on the dog but realized that even if our entire apartment is clean the fleas could have come from anywhere in the building! Neighbors dirty apartment? Neighbors dog? Carpeted hallways? Is this something that our landlord should be required to investigate? I feel like this is hopeless as my ankles are turning into flea food! If any of you have experience dealing with fleas in an apartment setting I would really like to hear about it!!!

Frontline for the dog, lot's of vacuuming for the apartment. Make sure to throw the vacuum bags away right after if it's a bagged unit, if bagless empty and discard in dumpster.

We are (Frontline) and as of today there are no visible fleas on the dog. I'm just worried about all the fleas in our apartment and wondering where they could have come from in the first place!

OP - I would a use flea killer made for carpets every once in awhile. I use it at home. It is very effective. I cant stand fleas!

OP - I would a use flea killer made for carpets every once in awhile. I use it at home. It is very effective. I cant stand fleas!

Our upstairs neighbors got fleas last summer and they came down through the vents and infested us(we don't have any pets). It was terrible. It took 4 bug bombs, 2 visits from the exterminator and washing everything plush that we own in hot water(clothes, blankets, etc.) to cure the problem. Don't forget to empty your vacuum outside. The fleas love to live in there for extended periods of time and then when you go to empty it they will escape and you have to start all over again. Good luck.

There is a once a month liquid you can get from your vet. You apply to the dogs back between the shoulder blades. This kills and prevents the fleas from jumping on the dog.

As far as the fleas in the hallway simpy spray around your door, 99% of the fleas are coming from the dog not humans. Fleas do not travel to find a host. They simply wait until one (usually an animal) walk's past them.


You need to wash all bedding and area rugs. Buy a flea bomb and let it off in the house. Then vacuum the entire house moving the furniture around to get under it.

Sounds like a lot of work but a couple hours shhould do it.

Frontline for dogs. I know the cat version is very very effective. Then lots of vacuuming and cleaning of the place.

Frontline plus or K9 Advantix on a monthy basis for the dog.

Vacuum the entire house every couple of days, (be sure to move as much furniture as possible to get the bastards that live under chairs/couches)

You can buy sprays for the house as well. (check the usual on-line pet stores like http://www.drsfostersmith.com/.../flea-tick/ps/c/3307/6.

I've used this company for dog supplies as well as aquarium supplies since before the intarwebs. VERY reputable, great prices. (there are many other sources that have been posted over the years here as well)

There's no way to know for sure where the yorkie picked up the fleas...could have been in the hallway, but most likely, it was outside. Doesn't take much contact to pick up a couple of fleas. Just walking through the grass, or by a bush/shrub, as well as socializing with any other dog/cat.
It's fairly common for dogs to pick up an occasional flea while outside. The topical flea products make controlling those fleas much easier.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. My roommate is in the process of getting the carpet killer right now. The fact that that will also kill fleas in the vacuum is a plus I didn't think of at first!

I used a spray flea killer for carpets, and it worked great. I'm not sure how well powder would work.

You can also get a water boiler and set it in the middle of the room with the top off. Fleas are naturally drawn to heat, they assume it's food, so they jump right in and die.

I was never able to get rid of them. I refuse to spray toxic chemicals in my living quarters, especially for temporary effect. I got rid of the fleas by moving out of the flatlands where fleas were common ;^)
