Is it for weather related reasons or just style and sick of ball caps? I personally cannot stand the fitted cap, I prefer the back of head adjustment.

So is it climate or just style?
Hmmm...maybe a bit of both. I've worn baseball caps (or hard hats) for about 50 years. If I'm out of the house, I have a hat of some kind on my head. Nearly all of them are "advertising" of some type or another...Ford, sports teams, places I've been on vacation, etc. I am tired of ball caps...thus this thread. I DO NOT like boonie caps...wore one occasionally more than 50+ years ago, not a fan of "cowboy-type" hats, SOME fedoras are fine...but they don't work when I'm driving, so those are out of consideration...I have a couple of ball caps (sports team stuff) that is fitted, but most are either snap-back or have velcro adjustments When I grow my hair long, the velcro always seems to grab it and pull it out of my ponytail/braid. Annoying as hell.

So...I have one Hanna-brand Irish flat cap, and have ordered one Mucros Weavers Irish flat cap. For now, that will do...I MAY add a linen cap or two for warmer weather...or not. Time will tell.

I’m fckn tired of “baseball” caps. I’ve worn them for more than 50 years.
I have a bunch. Only one I wear anymore is under my bicycle helmet. The visor acts to block the sun. All my other hats are more functional than baseball caps. For one thing, BB caps leave your ears exposed to sunlight. I had two precancerous lesions removed from my ears by dermatologist a few months ago.

Yep, my dad had Spock ears from skin cancer surgery.

I wear one of these:

Tilley changed the design a few years back which is annoying as the older design had a wider brim and dark green under the brim. On the other hand, Tilley offers lifetime replacement and I'm on my fourth hat. There is a piece of foam under the crown that is supposed to keep the hat afloat. It protects against head bumps and also is better in the Arizona sun.

Oddly enough, the part you left unwritten is less offensive than the part you wrote.

I wear a Tilley hat on my daily hike. It's a racy design, I really like it, but it's kind of screwed up. I found it, I think on golf course. I know they have a lifetime guarantee and say they will replace it if it gets screwed up, out of shape, can't be fixed with the usual techniques but haven't prevailed on them to do it, after all I didn't buy it. However, I could probably get a replacement.

I'll see if I can find a picture online...

Yeah, it's this one

I really dislike fitted caps, never fit comfortably for me. I like the ones with the velcro, I just fit it and then cut the excess off. For same reason, catches longer hair.

I like boggins in the winter if they come down enough to cover ears, I also have an old time Old Navy headband that also covers ears and works well on ball caps. Tried a Fedora, but just didn't feel comfortable in it. Them ruski type hats with fur lining that go way past ears are nice for extreme cold.

Mt problem with Boston Scally is that their hats are made in China. How the fuck can they tout their Irish heritage...yet send the production of fabrics and hats to China?
I mean I'd prefer they were made somewhere else but at this point if the product seems like quality and gets good reviews, if it's made in Asia that's ok. Try to get buy only wearing clothes made in the US or Western Europe and that gets real pricey real quick.

I am by no means well off, ie rich, but given the choice, I will spend the extra to buy USA over China. Case in point, Matterhorn boots. one model was made in USA, it lacked insulation, very similar model had some insulation but was made in China. The USA made boots remained waterproof for their lifespan, were easier to break in, and the soles lasted longer. The China made boots, I used for the winter, the waterproofing lasted 3 months.

I still have the last USA made pair here right now. pushing 10 years. I only had to glue whats left of the sole back to the bottom. The other pair, retired under 2 years. Price difference was about 30 dollars.

I'll spend 30 more to keep my feet dry.

I mean duh. I never said to never buy more expensive locally made things. I said good luck clothing yourself with things just made in the US and western Europe without it getting too pricey. never said don't buy anything made here.

I have some camper shoes and sneakers made in Europe, have a pair of Birkenstock Chelsea boots made in Portugal, I have a couple bags made in the US.

But I have multiple pieces of really good outdoor gear from some of the best brands like outdoor research and mountain hardware. They're not made in the US or Europe let's put it that way. My favorite pair of pants are DUER no sweat pants. They're amazing. They're not made in North America or Europe though.

You and I must have read each others comments in entirely different ways.

I simply was actually making a comparison that items made here are not excessively pricey vs quality, to be able to clothe oneself. I never said don't buy anything made overseas.

To put it your way, my favorite pants are Duluth Trading Firehose pants made in Vietnam.

I was just trying to give example of longevity of non China made products.
But you do you man.

EDIT: BTW China doesn't equal shit quality, the company using the china manufacturing has a say in the quality as well.

Look at Bitspower VS Barrow. If you know what that means.

all good- I did say if you try to 'only' buy stuff made in the west, it gets way too pricey way too fast. That's all I meant.

I am with you on picking and choosing your battles when something important to you is made here that has a solid leg up in quality. I definitely do the same.

I remember buying a Swift Industries Sugarloaf bike basket bag and all their shit was made in the US. Well, the next year, they started making some stuff in Vietnam. This was maybe 5 years ago I got that bag? They are dropping like flies.

Buy from China or buy from Ireland/England…for about the same price. (within a few $$$ either way)
I don’t dislike the Boston Scally caps…the couple I’ve seen, they look like they’re very well made…I just dislike the PRC.

But…FFS, it’s just a hat…if you like it, fine…if not, find something else.

I never did wear ball caps as my mega-melon does not fit the standard sizes. As with Boomer I wore a hardhat in my ~40 years at work, but nothing after the shift ended.
Now that my hair is see-through on top, I started wearing sun hats similar to the Tilley's pictured above.
Beats the hell out of slathering up with sunsreen up there.
I think I am going shopping for a straw hat for this summer.

I bought a peaky style hat. The Irish site didn't have that style. I really don't mind.

Not familar with a "Scally" in the sense of headwear, never heard the word used in that way,

Noun

scally (plural scallies)
  1. (derogatory) A rascal or miscreant, a scallywag.
  2. (Northern England, especially in Manchester and Merseyside, derogatory) A jobless yob who has little or no education and is suspected of having committed some type of crime.
  3. A flat cap or driving cap.

Was only familar with the second definition.

Still, if the cap fits...
