Flat cap, scally cap, ivy cap, etc…who wears them?

I’m fckn tired of “baseball” caps. I’ve worn them for more than 50 years. The old “trucker cap” (taller crown, maybe mesh back, maybe not) are almost non existent…with most manufacturers going to the lower profile styles that just don’t fit me right.

Not really a fan of the newsboy or baker boy styles, and the “peaky blinders” style of “duckbill pub cap” looks odd to me.

There’s a nice Irish restaurant and gift shop here in town, (the World-famous Galway Bay Irish Pub, Restaurant, and Gift Shop” and they have a nice selection of flat caps, mostly Hanna brand. I bought one today…don’t get it for about 10 days…b-day…but I’m still looking for others.

Mucros Weavers, Boston Scally, (made in PRC) Sterkowski…all make what look like nice caps…and are priced more reasonably than the Hanna hats. (the local place was a few $$$ cheaper than Amazon or any other place for Hanna)

Two that I’m considering are these:

Mucros Weavers, made in Ireland

Boston Scally, made in PRC.

C’mon…chime in…whatcha wear?

I used to wear one, but haven't in a long time. UK, Ireland, or GTFO. China's for giveaway advertising ballcaps.

I’m kind of the same way. BS makes some damned nice caps however. The material is wool/poly blend, the MW is 100% Harris Tweed.

You live where it rains so you can’t go wrong with a traditional wool crusher.

Because I hate buying any thing Made in China when I can avoid it...I ordered the first one from a seller here in WA. I was going to order it directly from Ireland...but didn't want to get snagged up with customs. (no idea how that shit works)

I’m a winter hat guy but not a summer hat guy. If it’s raining be sporting a hood. Cold and raining is winter hat and hood :D

Only certain people can pull off that look with those hats and it's on the smaller side of the amount of people who can pull it off.

I have one buddy who has always worn hats like that and it's always looked good on him. He reminds me a lot of the dude who played Dare Devil on the Netflix show years back.

Hats in general tend to be that way too. Like I really only can wear the flex/fitted hats. I don't like wearing snap backs and they usually don't fit me that well. And then even the flex/fitted ones I have to try em on cause certain ones don't fit the same, even if they are the same exact sizes and cuts.

I figured he worked on an Atlas site.
I was a crane operator and I “boomed” construction jobs. (Traveled around working on the big jobs, then off to the next one)

Fedora

I don’t mind fedoras…I have a nice wool Stetson, but can’t wear it while driving,.(head rests interfere)

I have a closet full of similar caps…tired of them.

Maybe a military boonie hat would be interesting for you. That's what I wear for work when I'm not wearing a helmet. Maybe not an 'everything' hat, but would be good for outdoorsy stuff.

Ugh...no thanks. I'm going to try the Irish caps for a while. If I like them...cool beans. If not...well, like I said, I have a closet full of baseball-type caps.

I dont usually like hats unless Its a boonie hat in the summer when i'm outside (helps with the sun), or in the winter when its cold, in which case I will wear a nice knitted wool cap. Always hated how most hats felt on my head, probably because my head is way bigger than normal and all hats feel too small unless they are XXXL or hand made.

I have two Boston Scally caps and they're the nicest hats I own IMO (material and craftsmanship-wise). One is the 'Boondock Saints' limited edition in black wool, the other is white poly-blend for summer (with the lighthouse insignia on the back).

I have another lightweight pinstripe poly-blend 'Guinness' flat cap that's more my daily driver. It was a $4 clearance item at Kohl's, so I'm sure it was made in China.

Probably have a dozen different FlexFit baseball caps, and a few different boonie hats too.

I only wear hats as a functional piece of clothing, for the cold, the rain, or for shade in the heat. I have horrible style sense, but from the two you posted, meh, eh. Can you pull off a hat like the Myth Busters guy wore? You'd need a handlebar moustache obviously.

I use something similar to this as well when at work. I'm not sure what you do but I work in agriculture and hats like these are a life saver for keeping the sun off my face, neck, and shoulders.

They're especially good if you wear glasses cause it shades the ears a bit. There's not much worse than sweating in the summer, getting sunburned ears, and having your glasses sliding around making the pain worse.

Mt problem with Boston Scally is that their hats are made in China. How the fuck can they tout their Irish heritage...yet send the production of fabrics and hats to China?

Is it for weather related reasons or just style and sick of ball caps? I personally cannot stand the fitted cap, I prefer the back of head adjustment.

So is it climate or just style?
