Flashing Intel X25-V firmware on the Kingston 40GB

Thanks schneiderguy for posting!

I knew someone would figure out a way. A big FU to Intel and/or Kingston for not providing this from the start....

So all of us Kingston 40GB owners are essentially out of luck then?

I feel really bad about myself (it is mean) and yet vindicated at saying "I told you so" to all kingston owners... because I did. (not you specifically, just in general whenever I had the chance)... oh the argument I got into about whether or not it was a viable choice over intel for an intel SSD...

That being said, its a real a-hole move by intel. I expected it to be kingston that would be the problem in such a case... not that intel will refuse to let them use the latest firmware.

Finally!

Just performed the flash on my drive today:

Notice that "TRIM" is no longer grayed out in the "Supported Features" box.

Well....this is weird.

I followed the guide at Overclockers.net and failed to update my firmware. No matter which of the methods in part 1 I followed (1,2, or 3 - I tried them all), the "iSSDFUT" utility could not find my Kingston SSD.

Frustrated, I tried booting the HDAT just because....well I was wondering if ANYTHING was going to work. It worked and just for the hell of it I hit "restore" in the DCO menu.

Guess what? My Kingston drive now shows TRIM enabled in CrystalDiskInfo (TRIM is not grayed out) even though my firmware is 2CV102HA! Basically my CrystalDiskInfo looks just like the one above in 996GT2's post except my firmware is listed as 2CV102HA. (If I was smart enough to know how to post pics I'd post it).

Very odd.

Not satified, I tried the dos command given to also verify if TRIM is enabled. I got a message that said I could not run that command because I didn't have adminstrative privledges. WTH?!?!

So while it appears I have TRIM enabled on my Kingston SSD with the existing, older firmware (something I thought was impossible), I'm not satisfied.

Are there any other disk utilities besides CrystalDiskInfo I could try as and additional verification that TRIM is enabled?

Thanks!

The 2CV102HA firmware also supports TRIM. This is the firmware that shipped on most of the drives AFAIK. I didn't update my firmware, I just restored it with the HDAT2 tool and TRIM is working.

You'll have to run command prompt as administrator. However that command only tells you if the OS supports TRIM I believe - it doesn't have anything to do with whether your hard drive supports TRIM. Crystal Disk Info is the most accurate way to tell.

!

Since you enabled TRIM without flashing the firmware you probably don't care, but in case you need to flash it in the future, you might want to try removing all other drives in the system if you have any connected. I had a PATA hard drive connected and it would not detect the kingston drive until I removed it.

Go to Start, type in cmd -> you'll see cmd (the Command Line Utility) icon.
But instead of clicking on it, or pressing Enter, hold down Ctrl + Shift and then either Click or Press Enter. It'll ask to confirm Admin privileges on this program. Should work now!

Alternatively, you can Right Click on the cmd icon and Run as Administrator
