FLAC File Question

Q: Can I convert FLAC to MP3? What about OGG?
A: Not directly and conversion to MP3 is not suggested regardless.

FLAC can be converted to MP3 only if it is decoded to WAV first (using Frontend). You can then use whatever program you've used in the past to convert music files to MP3. However, if size is of concern and these files will remain on your computer, please try OGG. The sound quality is infinitely better than MP3 and WMA.

But whyyyyyyyyy? With all the terabytes of space these days, you have to compress a rare flac down to a piddly MP3? But if you have to, rh71's quote was right. At least encode it well.

Well, then how do I play a flac file?

Only reason to convert a FLAC to MP3 is because Steve Jobs is a FLAC hater.

Curse you Steve Jobs!!!!!
Or you could just use *gasp* Apple Lossless Compression.

Seriously, at least TRY to do your own work. You type "flac" into google and the 3rd response is this.

lazy bastard.

I had already googled it and searched on the filext.com site. I've downloaded that already and 2 other programs, they didn't work.

Thank you pepsi, foobar worked.

But of course iTunes itself won't handle the conversion from FLAC, you have to convert to WAV first and lose your tagging information.

Curse you Steve Jobs!!!!! 😉

What are the file sizes like between a 320 CBR MP3, a WAV and a FLAC?

FLAC is ~50% the size of wave. MP3 is a lot smaller.

umm NO

FLAC is usiall 1.5-2x as big as a 320CBR mp3

wow, just how big is 320CBR?

<--uses VBR

Oh, my classical music is about 50%, the rest differ from album to album.

EDIT: Ok, just did a quick test of Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows

WAV = 46.8 MB
FLAC = 32.5 MB (not half 😱)
320C = 10.6 MB
preset-standard = 6.84 MB
