I started a new healthy initiative after my last physical. My doctor informed me that I was developing fatty liver due to weight gain. He also said I had moderately high blood pressure, high liver enzymes (probably due to the fatty liver) and high cholesterol. I realized I just couldn't go on living the way I was (eating out all the time time, drinks daily with friends, tons of salt and high calorie foods (steak and bbq were standard weekly items). I got inspired by Penn's book and did a 2 week potato fast. I ate nothing but potatoes for 2 weeks and lost about 10lbs. This part was really to me about getting over my processed food addiction. I then moved into a 'vegan' diet with no added fats or salts. I mostly eat fruit, potatoes for lunch (with beans on top sometimes), and a vegan dinner. I only drink coffee, water, and sparkling water (and booze on the weekends). The only added salt I use is tobacco sauce (It's magically good). Total calorie count is around 1500-1700 a day on average, but some days much less as I only eat when hungry. I'm down to 188lb from 219lb in about 3 months.
I haven't had any cravings. I'm never not full when I eat. I also don't limit my diet on the weekends and go to breweries and wineries. I also go out to eat with friends on weekends where I eat basically anything I feel like (although it's getting harder to eat out as all food tastes like nothing but salt). I've also fallen in love with nutritional yeast in a lot of my food.
What I'm concerned with is two fold:
1) How to keep my wife happy when she hates my diet. Maybe I need better recipes.
2) How do I increase my calorie intake so I stop losing when I hit my target weight? I'm never really hungry anymore.
Once I hit 180lb I plan to get a gym membership and a personal trainer. I want to put on some muscle mass and see if I can get a better looking physique.
I tried keto in the past and spent most of my time hungry or with heart burn. The diet wasn't something I could do forever. I had cravings and eventually relapsed and the weight I did lose was almost immediately back. I really feel like I could do this diet forever, but I have to find a way to make it 'healthy'. Any advice?
