Fix for blocky shaders in Far Cry?

A few months ago, there were lots of threads and screenshots of incorrect filtering of sheen shaders in FC with the blue floor of Archives (by the giant "ice cube" - you know the place) being the favored spot check, but for some reason, I can't find anything here or elsewhere about the causes/fixes.

DirectX 9.0c, 61.77 drivers with 5900 and 6800GT and patch 1.1. Any hints for fixing this? TIA!

i know the recalled 1.2 patch fixes it, but it breaks a lot of other stuff to which is why they recalled it.

other than that i suppose you could use 3danalyse to trick the game into thinking you are running a radeon, that is just a guess though. if you want to try, get the program from here http://www.tommti-systems.com/

At that site, I found a Visual Fix patch that force FP32 and makes everything look smooooooooooth, but it may be slowing things down. I need to experiment some more, but many thanks for the pointer.

5900 series, hmmm. The "blocky" floor and banding is not a driver bug, it's hardcoded into game by developer. The only way to fix it for 5900 series is to run the game with R300 devid.

Try 3D Analyze, change the device and vendor id. It might work (but the game will run significally slower).

I've got (as of last night) a 6800GT that replaced the 5900 - the blocking still continued. By adding the DLL, the banding is gone and after turning off AA (running 1600x1200, 4AF, every detail as high as possible), it's running OK and looking purdy.

If you have GT, don't bother with hacked .dll's, download 1.2 patch and DirectX 9c instead.

Leon: As noted, I already have DX9.0c (along with a 6800GT).

Snowman: The shoddiness of the 1.2 patch makes it a no go as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't planning on playing MP and breaking my saves (I finished it already) isn't the issue, it's just that it was clearly FUBARed and Ubi/Crytek appear to be disinterested in fixing it and/or communicating with the community about what's going on. If you look at the official forums, a lot of threads are of the WTF stripe and people are swearing to never buy another game from them since they shipped broken stuff that isn't getting fixed.

Install DX9c, unistall farcry except your saves, install farcry, install patch/update drivers. Worked with my old 1.1 saves w/ my 9800p and ive gone 50% more through the game w/ only promising results.

Another thing, what is 3D Analyze? What can u do w/ this program? Ive never heard of it :)

Back from the grave, it's visual defect time!!!

Just installed the 66.93 drivers and was running thru FC to see if the disasterous glitches with Lighting on Very High introduced by the 1.3 patch were fixed (A: they aren't) when I noticed banding in the specular highlight shaders on barrels, etc.

To confirm, I loaded up the "ice cube" level and instead of the old blockiness or the smooth effect that the hacked d3d9.dll gave, there is a distinct banding of the shading that actually expands and contracts in size as you move back and forth. I deleted the dll and it's still goofed.

Bad drivers, bad game patch, bad karma? Huh?

I don't understand this thread, I thought far cry worked great on both platforms. Best graphics and game that I have played this year.

i haven't had any probs with the 1.2 patch on my 9800 pro, running everthing at very high, water at ultra :)

AAAmazing game, awesome fun, awesome gfx, i'm glad that my fc experiences haven't been bolloxed up :)

Rather useless post, but it is worth saying that lots of folk had no probs with the 1.2s (tho enuff must have 4 ubisoft to withdraw it)

Well, it's nice that you aren't having problems, but WTF does that have to do with my problems?!? (I'll bet when you watch the news and they talk about world hunger, you think, "I'm not hungry. What's this story about?" :disgust: )

The 1.3 patch introduced insane glitches like this when Lighting is set to Very High and the new drivers don't affect this, so I'm guessing it's more *cough* quality CryTech/Ubi work, like the 1.2 patch was.

The odd thing is that otherwise, it looks even better now overall - MUCH more tactile and realistic in detail, so this blockiness is a PITA.
