I love In-N-Out, went there with my son yesterday for a double double with grilled onions, we split an order of fries and he gets their cheese burger with ketchup and cheese only. Their shakes are the best too.

None of the fast food chains makes a burger comparable to Five Guys. That's why I pay the difference. The only burger I've ever had that compares to a place like Five Guys is either from the more expensive restaurants, or at home - a perfectly-cooked bleu-cheese burger on the grill at home will beat Five Guys, but not all the time.

I wish Five Guys had the option to add Bleu Cheese as a topping. My god I'd mess my pants if they did that.

http://www.cheeburger.com/menu/main.asp

Like I said before, Cheeburger destroys 5 Guys. Bleu Cheese + 7 different cheeses and 40 different toppings, check. Anywhere from 5.5 to 14 oz patties, check. Quality meat with no hormones, additives, never frozen, only grass fed 100% angus beef, check.

Oh, forgot about their milkshakes. Over 378,000 different combinations? Uh, yeah. In and Out shakes are sht compared to Cheeburger as well.

Five Guys is good but no way in hell can it compete with Cheeburger.

5 Guys is classified as "Fast-Casual" (think, "Subway"), not fast food. Stop comparing them to In-n-Out. Also, when I went to the West Coast, one of the first things I did was check to see if Five Guys is around. They are, but the closest ones are pretty far away from me (close to LA when I'm in SD).

now there's one in point loma, one on the naval base on coronado and one there's been one in temecula. in fact the five guys in point loma is a mile and a half away from the in-n-out on sports arena. you can have a five guys burger and fries with a in-n-out shake. i love this city. :D

Woahhh. The cheeseburgers cost $3.50 here in Detroit not sure why our 5 guys charge so little here listening to what you all are paying across the country for the same burger.

Perhaps it's because your median income ranks 66th out of 68 and the average home there is under $6,000.

Chik-fil-a and now Five Guys? It's like I'm back on the East Coast! :D

had wendy's saturday night.

their burgers are okay, but not even close to as good as 5 guys. and wendy's fries are just LOL material!

I'm not saying they're "just as good"...I'm just saying they really made them higher quality since Dave died.

???

Larger meat generally tastes worse than smaller meat because it's harder to cook properly; small meat cooks more evenly.

Additives are to improve the food. Common additives in food are seasoning (salt), acid (vinegar), and thickeners (corn starch in gravy). Spinach tastes like dog shit on its own, but it's delicious when vinegar is added to it. Similarly, meat with no salt or seasoning will taste like shit.

If the meat is never frozen, how do you keep it safe? I keep meat in my freezer until I'm ready to cook it. Even if meat is kept in the refrigerator, it will still rot extremely fast, especially if it has no preservatives. You already stated these burgers do not contain additives (preservatives are a sub-category of additives).

Black Angus is the most popular type of beef in North America. Literally every fast food place uses black angus beef.

ok new rule: it's not a fast food place unless it has a drive through. That includes places with car hops who bring food to your car after you've parked.

This. Comparing Cheeburger to 5 Guys is silly. Totally different model.

The fact that Starbucks is #1 for anything leads me to believe that Zagat is completely worthless.
This. Not sure about 5 guys vs. others, but for coffee McDs and DD have been rated much higher than Starbucks in the last few years. What has Starbucks changed? Nothing.

Best dining value: Olive Garden? Really?!

Wow.

One, pure dead beef without other stuff is actually really, really, really fucking good. It's all about what the animals eat. The worse their diet on the farm of origin, the more additives needed to make them compete in the market place. Additives just tend to be cheaper than actually caring for the animal with a quality diet. Ever hear of Wagyu?

Second - meat doesn't just rot if not frozen. You don't have to freeze beef. The reason for freezing meat is to keep it longer with no fear of little pathogenic critters spoiling the party. Same for even using a refrigerator in the first place - allows you to keep it longer in comparison to keeping it at room-temp, all the while helping keep it free from pathogenic contamination.

Salt is the most original, oldest preservative in the world - it helps lock-up valuable water in beef, which also helps keep the surface as the only place contamination is possible.
You can keep beef out, with only salt applied, for quite awhile, and then cook it properly (160ºF throughout the cut)... not a single safety hazard.

Hamburger meat is more a challenge and a risk - it's a bunch of meat that may have originally been a "surface" of a solid cut of beef, and now it's all mixed up. With solid cuts of beef, only the surface can host pathogenic organisms. In hamburger, that surface can literally be all throughout the ground beef. 160ºF throughout, every single little piece of beef, no danger.

Of course, proper storage is also necessary. If the beef is delivered refrigerated, and is fresh, and is consumed within a day or two, it is 100% safe to keep inside only a refrigerator. The biggest issue between fridge and freezer is how long between storage, and consumption. If it's within 48 hours (perhaps even longer), it can be kept at low temperature, but not frozen, and not suffer in quality.

The selling point of never frozen animal products, means it has been slaughtered, purchased, shipped, and stored in local refrigeration, and that whole process is no longer than a week at most, IF longer than a few days time.

The fresher the dead animal, the more delicious it will taste. Quite simple actually.

But that's just it and why all of these 'best of' deals are stupid. Who rated McDs and DD much higher than Starbucks? What makes them right and Zagats wrong? NOTHING.

outback steakhouse is a fast food joint now?!?

Outback has a drive through/hoppers?

There's to go parking, but I didn't know people came out to give you your stuff. (I don't really plan on eating there regardless - just curious)

Yes and Cheeburger still makes a much better "fast food" burger regardless of model (only difference is sit-down with waitresses). And you can choose takeout, so what if it's a couple minutes more than 5 Guys? It's still better for virtually the same price hence Zagat = fail.

I've always been someone who's enjoyed a good burger with fries and a milk shake. I've therefore been looking forward to the opennings of some of those fabled burger places (e.g. Five Guys, Sonics) in the Pacific Northwest. Sadly, the actual experience has not lived up to the hype.

The burgers at Five Guys are tasty, but the buns are sub-par and there's no excuse for 'yellow' mustard IMHO. And no milk shakes? D:

Frankly, the best fast food chain in the Northwest is BurgerVille -- but it's pricey.

the model DOES make a big difference.

you can get takeout at Mortons Steakhouse, Outback Steakhouse (where yes they will bring it to your car curbside), PF Changs, TGIFridays, Ruby Tuesday, etc...

pretty much ANY sitdown restaurant you can get take out, and your order will be put in as a priority as well.

This is coming from the person who thinks Wendy's has the best burgers. Try some real meat without hormones or additives and 100 percent grass fed then get back to me. Until then, enjoy the pseudo-chemical beef that has been frozen for the past year and keep checking for lumps in your testes. Unreal that you would even contest that frozen crap like Wendy's beef is better than fresh beef that has never been frozen.
