Birds often live part of the year far out at sea, ie looking for and trailing fishing boats etc.

They probably devised a fresh water drip system using a plastic tent like covering over sea water. The water evaporates, rolls down the inside of the covering into some sort of catch. i dont think so. that show on Discovery "I shouldnt be alive" had a british man and woman who drifted for about a year in a inflatable life-raft that had the canopy. they survived by drinking the liquid out of fish eyeballs for their water.
