If he's lobbying to MS and Sony then there is no doubt or question anymore for me that consoles are the cash cow for gaming studios. Obviously Sony and MS are holding Epic back. Seems Epic is ready and are not sure whether to go the demanding hardware route or crap i mean console route, which is well known as not being as powerful as their PC counter-parts. My hope is that they make an Unreal Tournament IV with UT99 like menus and UT3 game-play with some additional movement options/advancements. UT3 is badass as it is for Dueling, DM, CTF, iCTF, Greed, Warfare. Diablo what?

+1 UT3 menu sucks and is why nobody plays it anymore.

I still remember the "patch 2.0" notes released-- "extensive server browser UI overhaul" all they changed was making it black and displaying bots as players in the server so people would think the game was more populated. LMAO.

....giving non-programmers the ability to edit game worlds in real time without having to re-compute in world lighting (which can take hours). Another example is better scripting of events, again to avoid the specialized need for programmers each time something is changed.

Ah....so it's finally caught up to what CryEngine2 was doing in 2006. 😉

You can't really judge a game engine from screenshots. You have to see it in action.

As far as what 3D chipsets they use in next gen hardware, they really need to keep the price down. IMHO, the only reason the Wii gained so much market share is because it was so damned cheap compared to the other consoles. Price is a major factor in a global recession. I think a big reason no one has released a new console in so long was the simple fact that it is financial suicide to try to launch a new system with the way the economy is.

I remember when the first screenshots appeared of FEAR.

People where saying "MEH"..."looks bad"...then the game came out..all all those tools suddenly shut up 😉

Unreal Tournament III is the best out of them all, period.

Lol.

That must be the reason why the original UT99 was over a hundred times more popular and successful than UT3 ever was, right? That must be the reason why UT99 had an active and vibrant clan scene and UT3 was pretty much DOA in those regards. Heck, UT 2004 also crushed UT3 in terms of popularity.

UT3 is widely regarded as a consolized abomination. The game play is OK, but everything that surrounds the game play is crap.

Well - you also have to factor in the expanse of competitive multiplayer titles available today (and even around the releases of 2003/2004, and UT3), and then look at what was available around the original's release.

So many titles available now... I personally wouldn't expect even something like '99, released today with today's engine capabilities (minus the console-aspect), to pull in the crowd it had back then.
I was personally never a huge fan. Played the titles at LAN parties with my buddies, but beyond that, it never grabbed me.

That, and as much as some titles can really put some polish on the Unreal engine, it's quite rare, and the seemingly "default feel" of a UE-title is just godawful imho.

It looks ok but nothing special, dynamic lightning and particle system looks good, but the rest meh.. I only hope they fixed that bs streaming from U3E, otherwise its double fail lol

Unreal tech why u no show Samaritan like type of character details, cloth, real hair, etc.? 🙂

Perhaps because what the wanted to showcase wasn't hair, cloth ect?

I swear, every tech demo should just consist of shiney, transparant or reflective surfaces..and all people would go "Oh looky...SHINEY!!!"...and not be any part wiser about what the techdemo showed or contained.

Well...because things like realistic hair and cloth physics are something that largely hasn't been implemented very well in video games - - so it's a big deal.

Developers can create static environments with incredible realism that make you truly feel immersed in the atmosphere.....but then some low-poly character waddles up with a plastic head and jerky animations and basically voids the whole feeling.

Granted, it's gotten a lot better, but is still not very close to believable. Having characters / clothing /etc..that moves and behaves realistically would be a huge step forward in gaming. I would love to see hair that can move like THIS in real-time - - realistic facial expressions that actually convey emotion, etc.

I think the ultimate tech demo would not consist of some flaming castle or pointy monster with fiery eyes......it would be of a normal human character interacting with the player in convincing fashion.

Animation plays a huge part in making things seem realistic. Greater visual fidelity demands extremely complex animations to keep things looking realistic, and I think this is the key thing that's lacking in games today.

For example, the hair in that video looks realistic... until they start moving the head. Yeah, they've clearly spent a ton of effort on animating it, but it just doesn't move that way in real life. Maybe on a different planet with much lower gravity.

The video of this engine looks much more impressive than the screenshots. In certain ways it looks better than the Crysis 3 demo, but in other ways it doesn't. I like the massive world design of the Unreal demo, but I like the overall look of the foliage and the nature in Crysis 3.
