...and I did the 500m in 1:58. Is that any good for my first time?

EDIT: I should mention it's also my first time rowing, not just on a Concept2.

You shouldn't be trying to set PRs your first time on the rower :) 2min is a pretty average 500m split for longer distances (2km-5km) for non-rowers. As a short guy built terribly for rowing, my PR was 1:35ish.

What kind of damper were you using?

Like what SC said, don't worry about where your PR stands compared to the rest. Get on some rowing sites, watch some videos, refine your technique (because there is a lot of technique to it, even on a C2), and the PRs will start to take care of themselves.

This. Every time I go to the gym and somebody sits down next to me, I have to stop myself from correcting their huge mistakes. Granted, I'm sure my form is a little sloppy after not rowing for years, but I think you'd have to be a rower to really pick up on it.

Welcome to hell! The erg shall be your undoing.

Aside from all that...what a great piece of equipment. Take the time to go through the menus as C2's really built a lot of tools to help you learn. The PM3 and PM4 are amazing. I agree with the others in that you should look up some videos on basic technique - none of them are the end-all-be-all but at least it'll give you an idea of where to start.

Head to the Concept 2 website and view the videos there. They have training tools like workouts etc... A pretty nice forum with a lot of helpful regulars.

You can also look up the world rankings for your age and weight over many common times and distances.

This is my average 8k run. OK for the first time I guess. But now imagine that you have to maintain that spee/stroke rate for much longer. My best 500m run is 1:32 but I did not go to the max. I love rowing.
