idk if it's been stated and if it has, forgive me but -- yeah, here in FL you have to move over 1 lane or slow down to 20mph.

I was just flippin' through here, and maybe it was already mentioned. But I'm reading here that yes, this whole having to move over a lane or slow down while someone is pulled over is indeed a law in some places. Correct? People are getting pulled over frequently in FL for it and not a lot of people know about it. Is this law in the Drivers Manual thing that most people go over before getting their liscence, etc? That booklet with driving laws, etc. If it's not mentioned in there, wouldn't it be easier to take it to court and dispute it? If it is, well then, just accept the tickets. If not, then maybe some things need to be added to the booklet.

Clearly they need to emphasize it more on the driving test, though, if it's so little known.

I always move over, but never knew it was a legal requirement.

Yep, the country where idiots are allowed to keep their drivers license. Ever heard of 'Common Sense' laws? They need to be a law because so many people lack common sense. Common sense would be switching lanes when there is a car on the side of the road. It seems like I see someone ignore this every day even when the left lane is free of traffic. Just the other day I saw a car just about hit a guy that was changing his flat tire (which was on the drivers side). Left lane was totally empty, yet the idiot in the car did not switch lanes and buzzed right by the poor guy trying to get his tire changed.

What is retarded is that we need to make laws like this because people are clueless.

well those cops shouldnt have been pulling the other cars over in the first place. 😉

but seriously though, why not just have officers approach from the passenger side of the car pulled over? If the officer is dumb enough to hang his arse into traffic, then let Darwinism take its course.

And If worst comes to worst, the officer could request on their loudspeaker for the car to move to another spot.

Seriously though, depending on how close that officer was to the exit ramp, I could see this as being a bull$hit ticket. especially if the officer had plenty of space.

Also in most cases around here, I see officers pulled over so far that their driver mirrors are flush with the right side of the vehicle they are pulling over. The combination of pulling over far and approaching on the passenger side seems to be a winner safe strategy.

Plenty of people will still plow into the stopped car, which will then run over the officer.
Not to mention it is much easier to take aim at an officer for the majority of people if the officer approaches from the right.

If someone wants to take aim at an officer I'm sure they would do it regardless of what side the officer approached on.

Granted the officer may be more safe if approaching on the left, because the driver might not have as good of a shot. In that case I guess the officer is trading 1 type of safety for another.

PS: if you step out of the car before the officer walks up to your car, can you get a ticket for that? What if they shout to stay in the car, but you step out anyways, because you dont like being seated?
I would prefer to just lean up against my vehicle while talking to an officer, if it wasnt too cold out.
 
Fight the power. Perfect driving is like having a perfect set of teeth. Nice to look at but everyone knows that you don't indulge in the finer things in life like speeding and chocolate.

Police remind motorists about 'move over' law

A nighttime accident on the QEW near Burlington that totaled a police cruiser has the Ontario Provincial Police telling motorists to watch out for black ice and remember the so-called "move over" law.

Just after midnight Wednesday a tractor-trailer jack-knifed on the QEW, crushing an OPP cruiser stopped on the highway's shoulder. The officer was responding to a collision on the highway near Erin Mills Parkway.

Black ice on the roadway is being blamed for the accident that narrowly missed Cst. Mike Cunningham, who had left his cruiser only moments before.

"(It's) just very fortunate that the officer wasn't in the car," Burlington OPP Staff Sgt. Jan Idzenga said Wednesday. "Obviously it could have been a lot worse than the situation was, but thank God he was not in the car."

Police are reminding motorists to be aware of road conditions and to remember an Ontario law that requires drivers to move over when police and emergency vehicles are stopped on highway shoulders.

Bill 191 amended the Highway Traffic Act to say that drivers should slow down and, if possible, move to another lane when emergency or police vehicles are stopped on the shoulder of a road.

Fines for not giving space to police cars, fire trucks and ambulances start at $400 for a first offence. Subsequent offences can result in fines up to $4,000, jail time and demerit points on a driver's record.

Even with the law in place, Idzenga says OPP officers are always in danger while working on provincial highways.

"I think for the most part our officers do everything to protect ourselves. There's going to be the odd time where there's not much we can do," Idzenga said.

Since 1999 four OPP officers have been killed while stopped beside Ontario highways.

I ALLWAYS get out of the lane closest to the cops that pull someone over...they FREAK if you get close, which they have a right too. There are many videos of cops getting jacked by a speeding car on a highway, even though they are on the shoulder.
