Then Paramount threw the franchise an Abrams shaped lifeline. The guy who masterminded Lost and Cloverfield brought in a young cast to play the original series' classic characters, and pledged to drag Trek away from nerdy technobabble, and into the mainstream.

Did people expect it to be anything else? This is exactly what he said he was going to do and I for one am willing to give it a shot. I am sick of 20+ years of Berman's and Braga's boring 'ole nonsense. So here's to something new.

I'll give it a shot. But nerdy technobabble is part of the heart and soul of Star Trek. If they take it away does it remain Star Trek or become yet another soap opera in space?

I'll give it a shot. But nerdy technobabble is part of the heart and soul of Star Trek. If they take it away does it remain Star Trek or become yet another soap opera in space?

it won't be star trek if it's not preachy and full of technobabble. but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean heck there is a lot of "real" star trek material out there. there's really little point to rehash it over and over and over. and frankly if it's good sci-fi you want, tv shows and movies are not where it's at.

There has to be a way to keep the franchise "scientific" but still mainstream. I want ST to thrive but not as some dumbed down garbage so the average American Idol fan can enjoy it.

Personally I think star trek technobabble is a disgrace to good sci-fi. Unless they can improve upon it, good riddance with all that "we'll increase the power using quantum feedback resonance in the deflector array energy level" bullshlt. they don't even try and just make up fancy sounding crap.

Good point. Assholes could at least consult a 24th century science book once in a while to fact check things in their fictitious reality.

Especially the most recent version of it: Enterprise. Awful use of it. You can thank B&B for that as well. I really hope Paramount has finally come to their senses by putting JJ Abrams at the helm. Lost is good (although a bit long winded), Fringe is pretty decent considering it's only in it's first season, and Cloverfield was a good enough monster movie.

I'm totally with you. I think that Star Trek is really very bad Sci-Fi, well at least the last couple incarnations. Basically every problem is solved with a pseudo Dues Ex Machina using technology. I think that is a very sophomoric use of sci-fi; throwing wizz-bang gadgets into a show is trite and condescending.

Yeah, Star Trek is cool but it gets a bit boring at times. For once I'd love to see something like this scene

Captain: "Ensign, the shockwave is gaining on us. Warp 9."
Ensign: "Yes, captain"
Captain: "It's still gaining on us. Warp 9.5"
[ship starts to shudder]
Captain: "Fuck me sideways. It's still gaining. Ensign, Warp 9.8"
Ensign: "Captain, I don't think the hull can handle the stress"
Captain: "Warp fucking 9.8 ensign"
Ensign: "Yes, captain"
[ship shudders some more]
Captain: "It's still gaining on us, Wa..."
[the hull stresses obliterate the ship and the last thing we see is the captain gasping for air as the vacuum of space forces bits of his brain out of his mouth.]

Or they could base it on real-world science and theories, instead of pseudo-magic technology. The original series was silly in its own ways (see Spock's Brain, parallel worlds just like Earth, including the Declaration of Independencec) but it didn't use anywhere near the later series amount of made-up technology as both the cause and solution for the plot of the week.

Scotty did things like cold-starting the engines, something that someone can actually wrap their mind around. All Geordi did was reconfigure the Deflector Dish to emit everything from Tachyons to tuna noodle casserole.
