If that's the actual new Kindle Fire, I think they took a step backwards. Looks pretty bad to me. Nexus 7 wins the sex appeal contest.

Doubtful. The bezels are not uniform length on all sides, and it appears as though the edges aren't completely flat with the screen (which is probably necessary to prevent accidental touches on the sides with the shorter bezels) and it looks as though the bezels have a slight curve to them. Not to mention that there's no physical button and the camera is located on the long bezel.

All that aside, I'm really interested in what the price is going to be on these things, especially the 10" version. Amazon might even be willing to subsidize more than Google so we could see a big price war in the near future.

Nexus 7 killed any interest I had in the new Fire. I don't buy digital content so Amazon ecosystem is a con rather than plus.

I don't buy digital content so Amazon ecosystem is a con rather than plus.

I watch paid digital content but it's Netflix (on multiple devices, including the Nexus 7) and iTunes (occasionally Apple TV).

Google may get some ad revenue or surfing habit data from me (big brother is watching) but I won't be paying them much for media. Hell, I still haven't used up my $25 credit. What I have used up is for IP camera software, and calendar and address book sync software.

The keyboard layout, and the search bar as well... I'm guessing some former Palm guys moved to amazon.

Not that this is a bad thing, despite having a very nice CM9 install on my touchpad, I still use WebOS mostly, the ergonomics are better, and the interface seems more refined.

The problem is, this is going head on with the Win8 launch, maybe Amazon can win on price, but interface and smoothness-wise it will be hard to match MS.

Really?

I hardly ever log into WebOS on mine, when I do I loathe it more each time. From the horrible keyboard (spell check sucks and it's a nightmare to move the cursor to where you want) to the way the browser opens every new page in a stupidly flamboyant way through all the non functional apps. Really there's not one thing I prefer about WebOS over Android.

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to reclaim the few gigs of space the WebOS install squats on.

Well, I can't make any decisions based on that image. I'll wait and see what they actually release, but I doubt I'll buy another fire, (I have the first one and have enjoyed it). Although I can't imagine how amazon could offer anything better than the nexus 7.

I'd only have any interest in the kindle 2 if it's cheaper than the nexus 7 (which i have already) and is easily hackable so that stock JB can be installed.

It'll be interesting to see if they take on the 9-10" tablet market, but I'm more excited about new e-readers. Maybe an edge/back lit e-ink Kindle with a bump in sharpness without raising prices? That might get me to retire my ~2 year old Kindle 3.
