Both, we live in a townhouse 🙂

1st floor - half bathroom, kitchen, living room
2nd floor - main bathroom and 2 bedrooms

I was searching through apartment listings today, and was surprised to see that first floor apartments nearly always tended to be cheaper than second floor apartments, even in the same complex.

I've always preferred 1st floor myself, on account of being hella lazy (not to mention it's a lot easier to get furniture inside the apartment if you don't have to worry about winding staircases), but what does a 2nd floor have to offer over a 1st floor to make it worth the extra money?

2nd floor. less problem with bugs. less chance of flooding. greater safety overall.

I won't live in a place where I can hear the people above me. My first place was the top floor and my second was the first floor. I liked the first floor place much better.

😕 um, but wait..

Bottom floor.

Easier to move in, easier to get stuff from the car, and I don't have to worry about the neighbors getting pissed off from my stomping around and other noise (others people's noise doesn't bother me at all and I'm a very very heavy sleeper).

First Floor

Pro's

Easier to move into
Quicker to get home

Cons
NOISE from above!
More likely to be broken into

Despite the cons, I still would much rather be on the 1st floor.

Right now I live on the 3rd of 8 floors..works for me. Before I lived on the 1st floor, I don't recall too much stomping around..now I never hear anybody, concrete construction in a condo ftw

Having lived on both, I prefer the 1st floor. Security doesnt concern me, the only time I was ever broken in on in apartments, the bastards had master keys. Less odds of complains when you live on the bottom, the bass from the stereo doesnt annoy people above as much as below.

i've lived in both, i prefer 1st floor, b/c when if people are stomping around, that gives me an excuse to blast my music... and if someone broke into my place they wowuld have nothing worth stealing 🙂

2nd floor also gets more heat in the winter.

and the summer 😉 dont forget that works both ways, one season downstairs has an advantage, and vice versa

And it depends on the apartment too.

Couple years ago I lived on the 1st floor of a row house, didn't turn on the heat all winter because the heat from 4 heaters and 4 water heaters in the basement below me kept me toasty.
