First GTX1070 review

The GTX 1070 is a good upgrade for me I have GTX 970 apples to apples 57% increase, overclock to overclock it is 47% increase.

It's not just the cooler, it's also the much higher grade power delivery components, heavier PCB, AND the heavier, higher quality cooler. Like I said, the 980TI was, until very recently, a flagship card. That's something a 1070 will never be.

Literally, the only argument you have is highly OC'd, aftermarket 980Ti's vs reference 1070's and even then, the only thing it wins is DX11 and older games. Still slower in VR, still slower in DX12, still 2GB less VRAM, still using a lot more power... And how long will that single advantage you're clinging onto last? What happens when we evga, asus, msi, etc etc get their 1070's out to market? Is there something particularly special about the 980Ti that allows them to cool it better then they can cool a 1070?

Not the aftermarket monsters that are readily available. Secondly it's been shown with the 1080 that aftermarket parts don't overclock much better than reference cards anyway. I don't see a reason for that to change with the 1070. I could be wrong though. Thirdly with both facts being in play and the fact you can get an aftermarket 980ti card that's faster and less audible than the 1070 fe RIGHT NOW versus whenever the aftermarket 1070s show up, it would seem the 980ti is a better choice. Once again I'll say it was a reference 980ti card which is known to throttle at high overclocks we all know Nvidia’s boost does this.

I'll give you the power consumption and the 2gb extra memory however inconsequential for the foreseeable future. As the furyX is doing just fine with 4gb.
If performance degradation and dx12 are a concern, then waiting for Vega is obviously the way to go as gcn is still better with dx12 performance features than Pascal. My point is driven further by your own suggestion to wait for aftermarket 1070 cards when the 1070 Fe can't be bought yet. Going further with your previous point about performance degradation. Dp 1.3 shouldn't matter,because by the time her monitors are out in force the next gen will be lurking around the corner in which the 1070 will be on the driver chopping block

You don't think Nvidia is coming out with GP106 soon? Die shots were in the web two months ago. I think both GP106 and GP107 will be out before the end of August and I think we'll either have credible leaks or a paper launch of GP106 within a week of RX 480's launch.

GP106 will probably be a sub $200 card imho. This may not have been what Nvidia was planning, but with AMD pricing the 480 at $200 I don't think they have any choice.

As such I expect the sub $200 recommendations to look something like this:

Budget $150? GP106
Budget $100? Polaris 11

Although once you get down below $200, the price points tend to get very squished together, and since there will probably be multiple GP106 and Polaris 11 SKUs, there will likely be some amount of overlap.

I would be surprised if its ready on June 29th, but I don't think we have enough details on either the GX480 or the 1060 to compare/contrast. If performance and memory options are relatively similar, it will probably come down to your preference for features such as gsync/freesync/etc. or the games you play. Until the 1060 is announced though, the GX480 will reign supreme below $300 IMHO.

GP106 will probably be a sub $200 card imho. This may not have been what Nvidia was planning, but with AMD pricing the 480 at $200 I don't think they have any choice.

As such I expect the sub $200 recommendations to look something like this:

Budget $150? GP106
Budget $100? Polaris 11

Probably not far off. I am not confident GP106 will be <$150 though...more like $199/229 or so. Maybe the GP107 (950Ti) replacement without a 6-pin requirement might slot between $100 and $150 if that SKU is announced. Just pure speculation there however...

GP106 may not be exactly $150 (that was really just a shot in the dark), but I can't see it being $200 or even close to it with 480 also priced at $200*

*this is based on GP106 likely being a fair bit slower than a 480.

I am not disagreeing with you here, but NV hasn't traditionally priced the 960 to always match-up with the equivalent AMD offering. They more or less just stick to the ~$200 price and you get what you get in terms of performance. I could see it a little lower (maybe) but $150 would definitely surprise me.

Like I've said before, with the RX 480 at $200, it means they can't price the R9 290 too far up. They aren't going to have a massive price hole in their lineup. I can see:
RX 480x - $250
RX 490 - $300-350
RX 490x - $400-500
RX Fury X Successor- $600

If you see what I mean, there are a lot of chances for processors to be priced below the 1070/1080 and yet potentially be faster.

For Nvidia with the GTX 1070 at $380,

They have to release a product that not only competes with the RX 480, but doesn't undercut the GTX 1070. A GTX 1060 at $200 leaves a $180 gap in Nvidia's lineup....

If all you're interested in is marginally better performance in what will soon be legacy games, and don't mind paying more for an EOL card that produces more heat, consumes more power and will be slower in multiple other areas like DX12, VR, potentially other API's like Vulkan, and anything that could benefit from an extra 2GB VRAM, and don't mind the very real possibility that driver support will be a 2nd priority compared to the current gen cards, then the 980Ti is the card for you.
