First Drive: Jaguar S-Type (R)

My dad bought the Xtype last year and I must say it's pretty darn sweet. I guess the Stype is everything and more!

The Xtype is nice for a Ford 😉. The S-type is a SWEET car however.

If the X-Type is nice for a Ford (Mondeo), then so is the S-Type (Lincoln LS).

No manual transmission = another Mercedes poser. BMW all the way 😀

You're calling Jaguars poser cars? 😕 I'd much rather have the S-type R over any (M)5 or 7 series. Has more then enough power to competitive with the Germans and its design is more aesthetically pleasing to me than the cookie cutter Bimmers.

You've gotta be sh!tten me? A S-Type R over an 6-speed manual M5??? Over my dead body!!!! 🙂

The M5 would crush that Jag all over the racetrack. This car is for posers (just like every AMG Mercedes vehicle), not enthusiasts like the M5. And at least the M5 doesn't look like an overgrown '97 Ford Taurus 😀

no but it does look like an overgrown 328i. Granted it's still an awesome car & I do love it's looks, it's still not that 'alternative' a design.

I'd rather it look like a 3-Series than a $18,000 POS🙂

I'd rather have the luxurious supple ride of the Jag.

<< The M5 would crush that Jag all over the racetrack. >>

I haven't seen any performance-related reviews of the S-type R yet. Have you?

<< This car is for posers (just like every AMG Mercedes vehicle), not enthusiasts like the M5. >>

I don't see too many 40-50 year old "enthusiasts" buying M5's for performance. The handful I've seen around here are all owned by older men in their mid-life crisis. BMW, like most european marquee's, are all about image. They are amazing cars, granted, but if you think this car is for enthusiasts, then you are seriously dillusional.

<< And at least the M5 doesn't look like an overgrown '97 Ford Taurus 😀 >>

Oh PULEEZE. The Jag has more of an original design than ANY of the 3, 5, and 7 series Bimmers. I can't believe you have the gall to say the Jag looks like a Taurus, and then turn around and imply that the Bimmer looks in any way original or new or fresh.

BMW is not the end-all-be-all of the european sports sedan market.

<< BMW is not the end-all-be-all of the european sports sedan market. >>

BMW is the standard that Audi, Mercedes, Jaguar, and the Japanese have YET to knock off the pedestal in the sports sedan category.

The 3-Series, 5-Series, and 7-Series are class benchmarks across the board for sports sedans.

<< They are amazing cars, granted, but if you think this car is for enthusiasts, then you are seriously dillusional. >>

Whatever. If you don't think that the M5 is for enthusiasts, then YOU are the dillusional one. If it wasn't for enthusiasts, it'd come with a auto option. IT DOESN'T! M cars are all about speed, performance, and handling.

<< M cars are all about speed, performance, and handling. >>

Of course, but that doesn't mean that most are purchased by enthusiasts. The market BMW targets, and the market that actually buys them aren't neccessarily the same thing. Enthusiasts (myself included) love the M line of Bimmers because of the above reason, but not too many people actually have $70,000 to purchase their flagship performance sedan.

Oh, and about your performance comment regarding the M5 compared to the Jag. Keep in mind the Jag weighs the same as the M5 (if not a hair less) and has 6hp and 40lb-ft of torque more. They are very evenly matched. A shame its only available with a slushbox... oops that was the enthusiast in me talking. 😉 😛

I bet my $25000 boosted Subie WRX could take em both 😀 After adding a $20 part, I'm able to get the turbo to kick in at 1800 RPM rather than 3000, so I've been hitting 60MPH in just a hair over 5.6 seconds.

If anyone needs an affordable Porsche, THIS is the car to get 🙂🙂🙂🙂

*sigh* And I bet my paltry $3,400 Ninja EX500 would waste your subie. The subie is in an entirely different market, and it isn't a fair comparison. Apples/oranges my friend!

Check out the brakes on the S-Type R!:Q

NFS4, i'm afraid you aren't giving the S-Type R enough credit. You do realize that it has a six-speed automatic and 400hp right? For nine out of ten drivers, i'll bet that automatic does a better job of shifting than they would. Most people aren't as good at driving a manual as they think.

The Jag has the Bimmer beat in looks, CLASS, and straight line performance. The S-Type R's track performance has yet to be seen but it may surprise you.

Oh, and you can't get the oh-so-soft-and-supple Connolly(tm) leather in your BMW. 😀

1) According to Edmunds numbers, the M5 would smash the Jag in straight line performance.
2) I don't like the looks of Jags. They all look the same, all lumpy and Taurus-like with the S-Type and X-Type.
3) I could care less about the Connolly leather.

I definitely agree with NFS4. It seems this car attempts to target car enthusiasts, yet offers no manual. This was the same issue with the IS300. It was a capable vehicle, but they lost the market with the enthusiasts for lack of a manual (I know they offer it now). Again, same with the Acura CL-S (I know they offer that now as well).

If one is an enthusiast, one likes to drive. If one likes to drive, one likes a manual. If one is an enthusiast, one likes to drive, and one likes a manual.... one gets a bimmer!

😀

Don't you care about its interior?? 🙂

While the S-type R does look like a worthy contender to the super sedan market, I still think the M5 takes the crown. It is the ULTIMATE SEDAN bar none. No other sedan can touchs its speed, hanlding, versatility, space in one package. I'm not saying the S-R is crap, I'm just saying it still doesn't beat the M5.

LOL, Acura is learning the hard way with the CL Type-S. They waited too long to offer a manual, and sales have gone down the dumps since it was first introduced. Honda is thinking about dumping it:

I don't like butter soft leather...I prefer stiffer leather, like in my car. Just b/c the Jag has Connolly leather doesn't mean that the M5's leather is crap.

<< m5 = enthusiast car? are you kidding me? m5 = rich old guys car, not power LOL >>

Rich old guys are the ones that buy cars like this...Ferraris, Lambos, M5, Z8's, Porsches, etc.

1) Of the various numbers floating around the net, the M5 averages 4.8-5.0s 0-60. The S-Type R averages 5.1-5.4s. I would hardly call that "smashing" the STR.
2) I still fail to see your Taurus references. Pics perhaps? And please point out what you think is so Taurus-like.
3) You should. Any discerning car enthusiast will tell you that the Connolly leather found in Jags and Bentleys is some of the finest cow hide in the world. Just because you don't care about it doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

It sounds to me that you are one of those people who was upset when Ford took control of Jaguar. You simply won't allow yourself to like them.

The //M BMW's are just as much poseur cars as Jags are, except the Jags do it with class.

A bit off topic (in my own thread, heh), but I was looking over the specs of the M5 at carpoint, and they claimed the M5 could only get 13mpg city. I knew the V8 would suck gas, but damn only 13mpg? How on earth does GM get 19city/28hwy mpg out of the LS6 in the Z06?! For the uninformed, this is a pushrod 5.7L with 405hp and 400lb-ft of torque.

I'd imagine the Jag being in the same class fuel-economy wise as the Bimmer.

Edit:

<< The //M BMW's are just as much poseur cars as Jags are, except the Jags do it with class. >>

Couldn't have said it better myself.

<< How on earth does GM get 19city/28hwy mpg out of the LS6 in the Z06?! >>

A very, VERY tall 6th gear. On the highway at ~75mph the car only turn about 2500RPM. (if that.)

The 6th gear in the BMW is probably tuned for performance in 6th gear (?) rather than fuel economy.
