<< A bit off topic (in my own thread, heh), but I was looking over the specs of the M5 at carpoint, and they claimed the M5 could only get 13mpg city. I knew the V8 would suck gas, but damn only 13mpg? How on earth does GM get 19city/28hwy mpg out of the LS6 in the Z06?! For the uninformed, this is a pushrod 5.7L with 405hp and 400lb-ft of torque. I'd imagine the Jag being in the same class fuel-economy wise as the Bimmer. >>

What is the weight difference?

<< A very, VERY tall 6th gear. On the highway at ~75mph the car only turn about 2500RPM. (if that.) >>

Hmm, would make sense. Here's the gear ratios of the 6-spd Z06 according to Chevy's site:

1st - 2.97:1
2nd - 2.07:1
3rd - 1.43:1
4th - 1.00:1
5th - 0.84:1
6th - 0.56:1

<< What is the weight difference? >>

The M5 weighs about 4,000lbs and the Corvette about 3,100 so about 900 difference.

overall i disagree w/ nsf4 on this issue because if someone were to give me that jaguar i would drive it with pride, however, he is right about it looking like the taurus. cover the front end and look at the car, it is the taurus w/ a different front end.

irony here is that according to most report, quality on the jaguars IMPROVED after ford took over.

apparently the brits suck and quality control. :)

... and here's the M5's gear ratios:

1st 4.23:1
2nd 2.53:1
3rd 1.67:1
4th 1.23:1
5th 1.00:1
6th 0.83:1

MUCH more aggressive. Look how short that 1st gear is! :Q

Well, that's not the issue. If someone gave me an S-Type, well yeah I'd drive it. But if I were buying one based on performance/handling, the Jag would take a back seat to the M5.

Joke I heard years ago
Q: Why can't the British make a computer?
A: They can't figure out how to make it leak oil in your driveway.

There's a reason you don't hear it anymore. ;)

that's good to hear. the disdain you show for this car in some of your posts would leave the reader to believe that you wouldn't take this car if your life depended on it.

to say it takes a back seat to a bimmer is obviously not the same thing. in my opinion, i'd rather have the jag, but i have 3 kids and the ultimate sportiness of the bimmer isn't for me. :)

I have an uncle who collects cars. Lots of cars. He has an old XKE that is to die for. Looks like it just came off the show room floor. I have often been told the older Jags are better after about 50k miles on them, because by that time, just about everything that is going to go wrong has and has been fixed. No matter, English sports cars are cool.

Mmmmm.

I LOVE old Jags, and I hope to own one like your uncles in the future.
