first day on the job, went by pretty quick since they got me busy real fast!

My boss asks me. "how much do u know about ada?"

I was like.. whats ada?

ada isn't a very popular language in colleges, infact i have never even heard of it until today.

I spent the day using the data dictinary to create the definition for all these variables.
I had to look at codes thats already been written and work from there.

Long and tedious! i guess i learn something new today.

They never metioned ada when i was interviewed, so they hit me with a suprise.

Why don't they use some of the more popular languages?

Heh, yea, ADA is still used by the DoD (I'm at a certain 5 sided building near Arlington)
anyway, if you're hired as a "programmer". it shouldn't matter what language they want you to use

I felt so stupid when i was just like "huh? ada?"

since i am only 21, i was barely a teen when this was popular.

They havn't told me how to keep track of my time yet, so nope, no punch card machine YET.

and one more thing, there are no chicks at engineering firms!!:brokenheart:
LOL!!! 😀 Um, no. Not THAT punchcard machine! There was a time before keyboards when programming was done by punching holes in cards... forget it.

Yeah, I'm not sure you were even born when Ada was popular. History of Ada.

It's just another language. Good luck man.

Hee, Hee, I remember my internship days too. I too, had to do ADA (but I was familar with PASCAL, so it wasn't a problem). However, the ADA was used for modelling-planning (it was the DOD's requirement), but then we had to re-write in a language called JOVIAL (which it wasn't!) Internships are cool because you never know what you have to program in. I've had to program in Prolog and PL/1.

As for your time, well, you probably won't have a time clock to punch into, but there's some kind of form. You'll find out soon enough. Just ask a co-worker how it's done.

As for chicks, well, I know you got into programming for the fun and excitement, didn't you? 😀 You'll find the women in the marketing, legal or regulatory areas. But seriously, be careful with in-office romances. Don't start off on the wrong foot!

There usually aren't any hotties working directly for DoD, but a lot of the larger contracting firms, Northrop, Boeing, Raytheon, etc have some hotties. Though its probably true for all large corporations

You are expecting a corporation to make sense? HAH!

Yeah, get used to large beaurocracies--nothing makes sense and the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Slow moving mastodons, where everybody protects their territory and the tacit mantra is "CYA" so you can't be blamed.

Accept this as a fact of life and don't stress about it and you'll be a lot less unhappy.

I have had to use ada on a few Dod projects that don't exist.

Its still widely used throughout the DoD, while I know some
want to move away from Ada, to possibly C. However when you have "stuff" that
is written in Ada, works correctly and is still used today, it becomes hard
to justify the large expense of porting code.

uh oh, I'm interning at the local Air Force Base this summer.... hope they don't want me to do anything like that! 🙂

More like the right hand doesn't even know the left hand is there.
