ummm.... no.

The director went with an artsy approach to the look of the film and that look doesn't really stand out in HD.

I disagree.

300 is one of two HD DVD movies I own (because I bought my HD DVD player about 2 months before Toshiba waved the white flag). It looks stunning in HD. Yes, it's a very stylized look, so you don't get the same effect you would get with something that's more of a traditional epic film, but I was absolutely blown away by some of the scenes. The detail you see in the snowflakes in the beginning is gorgeous.

of course in darker films if your tv is full of fail it won't render detail in dark areas:p

OK, so Ironman will be first.

I don't know if I will rent it or buy it but while I'm asking, what is the best place to buy blu ray discs?

I had a place bookmarked a while back that searches dvd prices but I can't find it. I figured it owuld have blu rays also.

go to AVS in the Blu Ray software forums. they have a stickied thread that keeps track of the weekly BD deals.

Typically, Amazon, Fry's, Deep Discount, Best Buy, J&H.... have rather consistent deals on Blu Ray.

I laugh whenever people complain about "BD being so expensive!" "$30 disks?? WTF??"

I own 30+ BD and HD DVD and I never paid 30 bucks for one of them. I'd say the ave price per disc that I own is ~$17. Well, BoB and Spider Man were more...but $54 for BoB and $60 for Spider Man set.

uh yeah...plenty of good deals.

EDIT: I shoudl say that I actually haven't bought an HD DVD since they folded. So no, this ave price does not reflect the $5 HD DVDs that you can buy today.

hrm....may have to pick that up finally :)

OP: be sure to check out the AVS PQ thread and be wary of bad transfers. For instance, you do NOT want to buy that transfer of Terminator 2 that is on Amazon. It's very poor and will likely be re-released by the end of the year. Germany and the UK each have better transfers available, but yeah...expensive to import.

Exactly!!! TDK has been the most costly for me, it was $23. The link in my post above your is Amazon, and they have quite a few on sale for under $20.

it should be: Apocalypto.. is a 2006 epic film directed by Mel Gibson and starring Rudy Youngblood. Set in Central America, during the declining period of the Maya..

wall-E is a great start...

Band of Brothers: reserve yourself a day to watch it all or, a week and a half if you want to watch a bit each night...

I almost forgot get the Swedish Blu Ray of Let The Right One In because it has the better English subtitles like the theater release did. The American version has horrible English subtitles compared to the theater and Swedish Blu Ray. You don't miss much from the American Blu Ray either except the Behind the scenes and the last deleted scene. Those can all be viewed online though. The other good thing is the commentary you get with the Swedish Blu Ray!

I just saw Casablanca on bluray the other day. Great transfer, everything really pops. The only issue I have with it is the mono audio, but it doesn't take much away from anything.

Crank @ $13 on Amazon is hard to pass up and is on the Tier 1 Gold list at the AVS site. You may wish to consider Beowulf as long as you're not too familiar with the original story. I've a passing knowledge of the battles around Thermopylae, so watching 300 drove me nuts. I did like Hellboy a little more than the sequel.

You really can't go wrong with most of the Tier 0 and Tier 1 movies, in particular the animations. Like zinfamous I wait for sales or shop online at Amazon et al with an ave price of Blu Ray ~$17 and bought Band of Brothers and Spiderman trilogy for $36 (Amazon) and $41 (J&R). Missed Kill Bill 1&2 when Amazon had it @ $30.
