I'd recommend Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World if you want to see a great film and if you have a nice surround sound setup.

Yeah for visual and audio... but wow, that movie sucked!

Go w/ Wall-E!

:frown: That's one of my favorite movies.

One of my favorites, too.

You hold him down, Jules, and I'll kick his ass.

Oh yes, I own them both and they are gorgeous, plus just a lot of fun to watch.

Thanks for all the recommnedations. Never heard of Master and Commander. Googled it and it has Russel Crow. I hate him :disgust: but I'll see if I can find it at the rental store.

I forgot about Ironman. Definately want to see that and remember the wife also wanting to see it when it came out on DVD.

ANd to answer a question or two. The tv is a 52" samsung 850 series LCD (not plasma vs LCD BS in this thread ) and it's about 11 ft from our couch.
The HT system is average but gets the job done.
Denon 1909 receiver
JBL speakers
Sony sub.

This isn't a dedicated HT system though. Just a small system for the family room/living room.

I might have to subscribe to netflix (aren't they the ones that rent movies online and mail them to you?) I know the Blu Ray player has the ability to stream netflix but not sure if that's HD, etc.??

Anyways, thanks for all teh suggestions.

The film looks grainy on purpose. It does look wonderful, but for showing clarity and sharpness, I would suggest Wall-E, Cars, Planet Earth.
Films...Ironman, The Patriot (awesome sound and surround separation as well), there are others. The AVS forums have a ranking system in place that is like the medal system. (Plantinum, Gold, Silver, etc.)

-edit-Later on if you find a good deal on Band of Brothers on BR...buy it . It looks amazing. It has an intentional grainy feel, but still comes out showing off Blu-Ray resolution and outstanding colors and contrast.

This looked really good even on TBS HD via satellite.

Ironman looked better on my home 1080p then it did when I saw it in theater. No joke... the theater's digital screen looked terrible and pixely.

Kung Fu Panda. The visuals are absolutely spectacular, particularly the color palette which is just breathtaking. Pixar's offerings are all pixel-perfect as well.

If you're not big into animation, I'd say Iron Man, the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Live Free or Die Hard, Transformers... most big budget action movies within the past couple years come to think of it.

The "noise" of the film is intentional.

I think Dark Knight has been the best looking movie we've watched thus far on our player, on a Panny 42" plasma.

When the camera is doing the big city skyline shots, it is incredible!

grain = good. Don't forget that.

BUT, the ave viewer will likely think such is crappy. B/c of the extreme amount of digital effects, 300 is extremely grainy as grain is often used to mask those digital seams.

I disagree.

300 is one of two HD DVD movies I own (because I bought my HD DVD player about 2 months before Toshiba waved the white flag). It looks stunning in HD. Yes, it's a very stylized look, so you don't get the same effect you would get with something that's more of a traditional epic film, but I was absolutely blown away by some of the scenes. The detail you see in the snowflakes in the beginning is gorgeous.

That's good to hear. My wife got me a PS3 and Band of Brothers for xmas, but I haven't watched it yet. Only because I had just watched it a couple months before that and I usually only watch BoB once or twice a year.
