When Michael Sam came out he was not yet drafted. IIRC he was an All-American and Defensive POY from the SEC (the "best" conference in college football). Based on his credentials he should have been a very high pick, yet after he came out he dropped to the seventh round. Afterward he had a tough time even making a roster. There were rumblings that many players were uncomfortable with him in the locker room. Eventually he gave up after a lot of circumstantial evidence pointed to him being treated differently because he is gay.

The difference here is that Carl Nassib is an established, productive veteran. It will be more difficult to treat him the way Michael Sam was allegedly treated, though as we've seen with Colin Kaepernick blatant blackballing can still occur.

I will say that Sam was never viewed as a high draft pick, although his 7th round selection was behind his early projections, things started changing when he was measured undersized for an NFL DE and slow for an NFL rush LB. I'm not sure how his coming out had to do with his actual draft spot. It sounds reasonably likely that owners were at least concerned that there may be strife in the locker room if he were drafted. Outright discrimination -- possible but hard to conclude based simply on his draft position.

Makes all the sense in the world, be a member of the party that wants to take away your rights
Right. It's not the left that is defending Muslim extremists that ACTIVELY BELIEVE homosexuals should be stoned to death.

But you know us righties, we have a new bash the queer meetup every week

Who is defending muslim extremists? It's your party that just hates muslims in american in general. Remember your cult leader making up stories that people were dancing on rooftops across the river in celebration on 9/11?

And yes, the right, with your base of evangelical brethren, fucking hate giving gay people any rights.

Don't you have some more gaza to defend?

You think being sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinian people is extremist Islamic thought, and acknowledging the complications of the area, but nothing religiously extremist about the state of Israel that was created under the mythical guidance of a fairy tale religion, under the guise that this is our promised land? Because white Christian Europe couldn't stop persecuting the Jews so they needed to give them something? That's rich. Let's not forget, those that march chanting Jews will not replace us are Very Fine People according to your dear leader.

Want to talk about a party directly trying to kill gay people, educate yourself on the Family's association with Uganda kill the gays law.
Hillary, ‘The Family’ And Uganda’s Anti-Gay Christian Mafia (thedailybeast.com)

Name one Democrat involved in helping extremists kill gay people. Even today Democrats can't get all the anti-gay laws off the books because of the right but you just keep spitting in the wind.

I don't know if you're aware... But....

The sad part is that I bet many people in the locker rooms and on the field with him do care. There's still a HUGE stigma on being gay in such circles.

I hope this will give other players confidence to do the same thing.

I'm looking forward to watching homophobic NFL personnel and fans flail out of control when a legion of closeted gay players come out in quick succession.

So you are saying that just stating that you are Christian is ramming your religion down someone's throat? Because that's all this guy has done. He's just said he's gay.
I can see why he's done it as well. It's a lot nicer for him than having the press constantly looking into your private life or making snide comments. There's literally no reason for him not to mention it if he wants to, and it's probably actually going to be a big deal for any other gay players that are starting out.

Imagine how he'd react if everyone started saying that religious people shouldn't say they were religious or be religious in public!

The US just had like a decade long moral panic from evangelicals over Islam and how everything was "Sharia Law" because there were externally religious non-christian brown people merely existing in view.

Maybe I should have used "Christian" rather than "religious" in my post!

I have to laugh at how one active NFL player offers the most modest "I'm gay" statement ever and you see it as ramming gayness down your throat (also, gotta love your unintentionally appropriate metaphor).

He's the first in the league and clearly doing it to destigmatize gay people in sports. If you see that as a horrible act, that speaks more about your homophobia (and basic lack of human empathy) than the LGBT community.

Republicans when Kaepernick kneeled: Keep your politics out of my sports!

Republicans when troops haul out the 100 yard long American flag (displayed against US Flag Code) while various death machines fly by overhead: 'murica, fuck yeah!

Wow, specious arguments are easy to make.

The dude simply said he's gay.

Why are you being such a fucking snowflake about it?

Gee, I wonder why someone obsessed with things being "rammed down" people's throats is made uncomfortable by other people being visibly gay. Hmm.
