Depends on the size of the rocket. The one in the video looked pretty big so even if he had his hand open, it'd still probably do some serious damage.

With an M250 or larger, and open hand wouldn't make any difference. Even and M80 is going to burn you and perhaps open you up in an open hand. This was probably an M250 (approx. 3" x 1") which would contain roughly 200 grains of flash powder and some airspace. If this went off withing 6 inches of his hand, the hand would likely be destroyed, and that appears to be the case.

I had access to M250s and M500s in my twenties, and I can tell you the destructive power of them was surprising.

We drilled a hole at the base of a small dead tree (~8" dia.) in my friends back yard stuffed an M250 in there. We expected a bigger hole, we got a fallen tree. We threw one in a wreck at the junkyard and blew out all the glass. We set off an M500 on the grass and were left with a 3' crater 3" deep in the center.

These fireworks are banned most everywhere, so most of them are home made (by people that know what they are doing) so the standards for which explosive and how much vary somewhat. The stuff we had was made by a guy with a license to make explosives for local fireworks shows. I have my hands because the fuses were 6" long.

If you keep replaying it at about 8 seconds, you can see what looks like strings coming off his one hand. I don't know if thats shreds from his jacket, or if that is actually what is left from his hand dangling.

To me it looks like he lost both hands to be honest... it exploded as he was holding it with both hands. There are some frames where the sleeves flap back and you can see the nub but the quality is so bad you really can't be sure.

I had missed the links and just clicked now. Wow, nasty. That totally sucks considering it could have easily been prevented by being smarter.

My rule of thumb(which I still have) with fire works or anything that goes boom is to set it up the way I want, THEN light it, and stand back. Assume that the fuse is only 1 second. The safer fireworks are the ones that use an electrical detonator as you don't have to go near it at all to activate it. Even the small ones you buy can be dangerous if miss handled.

I remember lighting up some rockets at camp, the small ones you just stick in the ground. I'd always stick them in the ground first, then light it. I doubt those could have done much damage but still treat it like it can.

I'm not a fireworks expert by any means, I just think this is all common sense. I think these guys could use a hand in the safety department.

I think he could use a hand for everything for the rest of his life...
