I have always wondered how web browsers make money, seems Microsoft is always spending fortunes to develop their to get a higher user base, but where does the money come from?

I've heard the Mozilla makes money off the search engine referrals.

Contractual arrangements with companies like Google and Nokia are also accepted, but due to the strict rules governing the non-profit status of the Foundation, such things are taken care of by the Mozilla Corporation. A wholly-owned subsidiary of the Foundation, it was set up in 2005 to look after all business dealings and oversee all those lucrative contracts, like those which see Google and other popular engines provide default search referrals and which are said to account for over 80% of the company’s total revenue. The Corporation’s Board of Directors and Management Team are made up of Foundation members and various business people.
Mozilla continues to get much of its wealth from companies like Google, who has recently committed to extending its dealings with the company until at least 2011. Whether advice offered by Mozilla’s Director of Community Development, Asa Dotzler, earlier this month to ditch Google in favor of Microsoft’s Bing search engine signals a forthcoming change to this relationship remains to be seen. But whatever happens with that, so long as Mozilla continues to openly innovate, inspire, freely create and grab an increasing share of the internet application market, companies will no doubt be more than willing to offer huge sums of money by way of donation or investment and so help to ensure its survival.
Are you surprised that Mozilla gets most of its income via contracts with companies like Google? Have you ever donated to, or received a grant from, the Mozilla Foundation or know anyone who has?

Can Firefox 4 be installed along side Firefox 3.6.14 ? ?
Not sure I want to trust a release candidate until all
the bugs are out.
FYI ... as I type Firefox is updating to 3.6.15

Yea, you can even share a profile. That's not necessarily recommended, but that's what I do. Install the nightly tester tools, or compatibility reporter, and you can force addon compatibility. That makes many work that aren't officially compatible.

That addon compatibilty one is nice. I added it to Firefox, just in case some of mine do not work in FF4

I will have to check this out although I am not expecting much. Been having massive amounts of problems with our ISP lately, they oversold bandwidth to the extreme.

Switching to Chrome from old FF helped a bit, but considering I am pinging over 400ms to a server not more than 60 miles from me, there are deeper issues.

I'll still take the low light pollution and hiking of the "sticks" over fast internet any day...

Do you know what "beta", "release candidate", and "pointless rant" means?

hehe, I was going to mention something. Thought the Thread was created today, not weeks ago. As of yesterday FF was wanting me to try the BETA.
