Does anyone noticed that firefox has a short lag before loading pages, which is annoying because IE seems to start rendering the page immediatly after clicking a link. I have firefox 0.9.2 and like it a lot, but recently after convincing a colleague to try it and switch from IE, he pointed out this fact, and when I performed a direct comparison it does indeed look like firefox has a delay there, which makes it seem slower than IE. Are there any comparative benchmarks out there ?

go HERE and scan to the bottom, do the "speed up page rendering" and "enable pipelining." that should speed things up a bit.

I was having a freezing problem with my firefox 0.9.2
i upgraded it to 0.9.3 (uninstalled 0.9.2 first) and still didnt fixed the problem.

I ended up erasing all the files associated with firefox, even the one in c:\documents & settings. Then install it. And the problem was gone.
OF course before i erased all the files, i made a backup. So after the new install, i just copy over the bookmark file and almost everything was the same as my old install. Just need to re-add extensions and change some configs.

To all of you that thanked me for this post, you're more than welcome. I know a lot of people use Firefox and would like to be informed when new versions come out. You know, when 0.9.2. came out and it was posted in this same forum, I don't remember all of these people complaining "It's not a Hot Deal" and "This doesn't belong here." This may not technically be a Hot Deal, but it is something a lot of people would like to know about so what does it hurt? Besides, if you want to go around policing all the threads that don't really fall into the forum they are posted in, you have a lot of work to do past this thread. The thread title is pretty self explanatory so if you don't like what you see, don't click on it. :) To everyone else, you're welcome. I'll be sure not to post anything like this again, even though I was following an example that was previously set.

If someone was posting a new version of Opera (which, imo is a superior browser) they'd be flamed out of their minds.
Just because it's a software program that the software masses enjoy doesn't make it a "legitamate hot deal"

Just my 2 cents.

Maybe if it were free or heavily discounted, it would be appropriate to post Opera as a hot deal.

Tried firefox when 9.1 came out - am hooked. IE & MS can kiss my rosy red ****(use your imagination). Seriously, firefox beats the tar out of IE. leaner, cleaner, meaner

Thanks! I'll give it a try, my machine kept hanging up or not recognizing links on the previous build. Hope this clears that up.

yes, it is better in many ways, but is it really faster ? I'm still suspicious that it loads pages slower than IE, does anyone know of any serious benchmark comparisons ?

i use firefox for my normal internet surfing, with Flash not installed. if a site needs flash, there is a context menu button that lets you vie the current page in IE. perfect browser.

You can install the flash player for FireFox as well... I think you have an extension installed to view the current page in IE, that context menu isn't available normally..

Flash Player

After you get flash installed you might wanna check out Flash Block. It's a firefox extension, that replaces Flash objects with buttons, that you click on to play the flash. It's awesome for stopping those Flash ads that make annoying noise or cover up the page content.

An official thread should be made for Firefox and updated as needed. We don't need a thread everytime a new point release of Firefox comes out. This is an idiotic method of doing it. Still not a hot deal.

You don't have to. Extensions, themes, bookmarks, history, saved passwords, cookies, and such aren't uninstalled and aren't changed at all when you uninstall and reinstall the browser.

Then make the official thread...people need to quit crying about things not being what they determine to be a Hot Deal. I think there are enough people interested to justify this thread's existence, but if you have a better way (and your official thread idea is a good one) then by all means take action and do it instead of crapping on other threads. ;)

Bahh! Post away. Let the crappers do their thing as they will never be satisfied. This does qualify as a Hot Deal under most any definition. As you mentioned, there are far more, much less qualified posts in ALL the forums that these folks should be worried about, before they start knocking this one.
Thanks for the post.

Hey, just realized this is a security patch for a png vulnerability? Thanks for giving this visibility in hotdeals. WHo the heck reads the other anandtech forums. Given to the volume of replies to questions like what is a good scanner or stuff this place is useless for anything but hot deals and maybe overclocking. Thank you very much again!

More stable and secure than IE... until it becomes mainstream (and targetted by hackers and viruses).

You hit it dead on... it's only a matter of time.

I expect it's happening already - 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 have both been security fix releases.....

Um, these flaws aren't being targetted by hackers and viruses. They are simply being fixed as soon as they are discovered by a dedicated team of developers that prefers to release fixes ASAP. This the opposite of Microsoft who waits until the whole world is attacked before releasing fixes for things that have been discovered months (sometimes years) ago. MS *has* gotten better in this regard, but there are still enough *known* flaws in IE that even the silly Dept. of Homeland Security advises you to use something other than IE.

You should be PRAISING them for releasing the fix instead of letting it go MS-style! :disgust:

I am not sure this should be posted in hot deals... Firefox is the best thing since sliced bread, but it's still just a software update! :)
