Also, I didn't watch the video in the article; I don't need to see that sort of stuff. But, the image clearly shows that he's in a shower. The kid who died wasn't anywhere near a shower. Further, one contributing source to death, and very possible from the location of the fire is due to this thing humans do: breathing. Inhaling very hot air can burn the lungs, reducing their ability to do what they're supposed to do, plus the burns in the lungs cause all sorts of other bad things (fluid to build in the lungs).

We're looking at this thru a camera. When it ended he probably wasn't even in a lot of pain. Its the 30 min to an hour after. That's when you really start to feel the burn.

the article also has a picture of another black boy doing the fire challenge in the shower, has a news video of a white boy who is recovering from the challenge, and then the other video of the black boy who isn't near a shower, but he clearly runs into a bathroom into a shower, which didnt appear to turn on, but they got the fire out after a short while too. so who knows.
