FIOS in my Area.

Cablevision/Optonline is now offering FIOS in my area, in Nassau County in Long Island. They seem to have beat Verizon.

30Mbps down and 2Mbps up for an additional $14 a month, you also get some other little goodies like being able to run a server.
But also current users of the normal Optonline got bumped up to 15Mbps and 2Mbps, but I think you need a new cable modem.

What I don?t understand is that FIOS is fiber optic cable and I thought they had to change the cable line for that? They don?t say anything about that only that it?s ready to go.

Anyways, it looks like all I need is a new Cable Modem to get the new 15Mbps down and 2Mbps up and if I want I could get the 30Mbps for a little bit more $$.

ARGH! BellSouth sucks, and bright house networks are a bunch of greedy bastards.
<- has to deal with puny 5mbps/384kbps for $49

I hope FIOS is widely available after I get out of college in a few years...

<-- is spoiled by OC3+ connection speeds 😀

I'm on two frac DS3s here at work, but something about 30Mb/5Mb for under $200/mo if not a lot cheaper makes me drool

It would cost me, $64 to get the 30/2
but from reading on DSL reports, I think I need New Cable modem, plus new Router. I wonder if need also a new VOIP Box also?

I love my FiOS. I am in Nassau. I thought about going back to OOL but I feel Verizon will come back and beat them out... and all the fiber it runs over is all brand new. 🙂

ahhh! i hate living in the country sometimes. I HATE SATELLITE.

sigh i keep bugging all the companies every month. trying to get anything out here heh.

Fiber comes from the pole and it terminated in a box on the side of your house. From there it comes into the house as CAT5e.

I used to have BellSouth 3 meg dsl, but at my new house I only can get 1.5 (and it seems to top out at .7). I have an OC48 at work and an OC 192 if I need heavy bandwidth via a friend.

Thinking about changin my DSL over to 8 meg Cable for home. Not sure yet.

Well I don't think i have that. The line i have was especifically put in from the pole about 5 years ago directly into one room in the house. Its still that old cable back 5 years ago. How could that handle higher speeds?
