FIOS gets even faster

LAS VEGAS--Verizon Communications is boosting speeds for its Fios fiber-to-the-home service, the company plans to announce Wednesday.

The company's COO Denny Strigl is expected to announce the speed upgrades during his keynote speech at the NxtComm trade show here. The upgrades come as Verizon customers use more bandwidth intensive applications such as video downloading and photo sharing.

"The appetite for bandwidth shows no sign of slowing down," Strigl said in a statement. "Neither will we. We've already had successful trials of the 100-megabit home, which will be a reality faster than anybody thinks."

As part of the upgrade, all Fios customers will now have access to download speeds of 50 megabits per second and uploads of 20 Mbps for about $140 a month. The company is also offering its symmetrical 20 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload service to all Fios customers for $65 a month.

Verizon had already been offering these speeds in certain markets such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. But now the service will be expanded to Verizon's entire Fios customer base, which is spread throughout its 16-state territory. Previously Fios in these states, such as Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, topped out at 30Mbps/15Mbps and 15Mbps/15Mbps.

Verizon will also upgrade its mid tier offering increasing speeds from 15Mbps/2Mbps to 20Mbps/5Mbps. And the low end service will increase from 5Mbps/2Mbps to 10Mbps/2Mbps.

We started at 20/5 in this area for some reason so we don't get the increase but it's great for those who are at 15/2 or 5/2. Currently do 350GB/mo. at 20/5 for $55/month... ludicrous speed. I grabbed a 750mb, 2-hr tv show in about 5 minutes the other day.

Can't imagine going at 20/20. I'm gonna need a serious reason for that.

I'd assume this is to screw with Comcast. Comcast's mid-tier in FIOS areas was recently made 16/2 (up from 8/768), this puts them ahead of Comcast again. It also puts them ahead of Comcast's low-end (although standard) 6/1 tier.

Is it in Tucson yet?...I don't really know how it works.

$65 a month is only $15 more than what I'm paying for Cox right now.

That's great... now if only they could roll it out where I'm at so I could get it! I'm a hostage to my cable ISP, I pay waaay to much but I have no leverage as there are no other legitimate options in the area.

20/20 GOOD GOD
:shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:

id be happy with 1/2 that, hell id be happy if i could get 1 up and not thsi shitty 512k up that TWC gives me

So we do get 512kbps up? I just got RR and speedtested twice to about 384kbps, but during the day where I don't expect to get max rated. Also I heard you can upgrade to 10mbps/1mbps for only a little more.

Good god, the FIOS speeds and prices blow everything else away completely. I'd actually end up going towards their lower tier as I just have no need for such insane speeds!

you have to pay for the next faster speed, the 8mb down one (this is dependent on area) its supposed to be 768 but i never get that 512 is closer to reality

they actually offer 10/1 in some places

i pay 65$ a month for 8/512 lol 🙁

Wow. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to offer 20/20 since it doesn't match the usage pattern of most legitimate users. Unless optical networks differ from wired networks and increasing the upload speed doesn't cost them on the download side.

all i want is 5/2... that's it. 10/2 is just a bonus. but noooooo. they don't want to roll out where I live. yet it seems every surrounding area has it. it just irks me because I live in the initial roll out county.. and will probably be one of the last to ever get it at this rate.

It seems all the other Fios markets have much better rates, here's what I have offered

Up to 5 Mbps/2 Mbps $42.99/month <- me
Up to 15 Mbps/2 Mbps $52.99/month
Up to 15 Mbps/15 Mbps $64.99/month
Up to 30 Mbps/15 Mbps $139.95/month

I would imagine that it'd be deployed in Phoenix before Tuscon, being the larger city with more potential customers.

I'd drop Cox Cable in about 5 seconds if they offered Verizon FIOS service here. Its possible to get Qwest Fiber a few blocks away though.

Verizon's 16 state deployment is pretty sad, they should be expanding a lot faster than what they are. A few years ago, when I first looked into FIOS, they were in the same 16 states they are today.

It takes time and money... they're spending billions per year on this. I believe the cost of the program is about $1000 per house.

I was talking with the tech who set me up and asked why my particular town was 2 years behind neighboring towns (same county). He stated that sometimes Verizon faces jurisdiction problems (vs. cable companies, etc.) and have to await a court decision. This was the case for Long Island towns and each had to provide approval. He added that in NJ, it was 1 approval for the entire state, so it was much easier. It may be the case that your towns are doing the same thing to them.

It'll be 10-15 years before I see anything like that. At which time everyone with be at a symetric 1000mb connection.

It cannot be that bad if they do this in MAJOR cities, IE Minneapolis. I live in a condo complex, so I guess, maybe, its a bit tougher to wire everything up.
