Clint Mansell and Hans Zimmer are my two favorites. The Fountain Soundtrack is unspeakably amazing, and Gladiator is as well.

2001: A Space Odyssey FTW 🙂

The contrasts between the sweeping classical music, immense silences and disturbing sound effects* are amazing.

* e.g. the monolith choir

Hans Zimmer is a good composer.

Given, his protoge, Klaus Baldet is pretty good as well. John Williams is the more Iconic composer of the later 20th century (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ET, etc)

GLADIATOR - Opening batte is VERY Good, but so is the Right Stuff theme (North and South)

How could I foget Backdraft? Never saw the movie, but an awesome soundtrack.
Blackhawk Down?

Zimmer's music is just so dramatic and moving. Like I said in this thead...the music makes the movie!

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was imo one of the three finest westerns ever filmed. The soundtrack and cast had few equals. The cinematography was simply brilliant.

I think of the opening song, with the gunshot noise.....

dododo dooooooo wahhhh waaaa waahhhhh *crack* dududud doooowwwww wahhhh waaaa wahhhhhh *crack*

For a mainstream movie Pulp Fiction had a fine soundtrack, that added a great deal to the film. Certainly it's old and busted, but it was nice at the time.

~edit
I see we're talking about compositions here....

I'd say Glory, Star Wars, Last of the Mohicans, & Gone with the Wind come to my mind first...

How could I forget Last of the Mohicans???

I saw it recently, and really it was pretty forgettable. The soundtrack was very good and very well used though.

As to the rest of it, the story doesn't really seem to go anywhere, and then doesn't end... I thought I remembered really liking it, which is why I wanted to watch it again, but it didn't hold up... maybe it's just me.
