North American moviegoers fell hook, line and sinker for the fishy fable "Finding Nemo," which sold about $70.6 million worth of tickets in its first three days, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

The computer-animated family movie, about an anxious clown fish who seeks to rescue his plucky son from an office aquarium, set a new opening record for a cartoon, surpassing the $62.5 million bow of "Monsters, Inc." in November 2001.

The top five was rounded out by the Keanu Reeves sci-fi extravaganza "The Matrix: Reloaded," which fell two places to No. 4 with $15 million in its third weekend. Its 62 percent drop was the steepest in the top 10, and observers said the Warner Bros. release will struggle to reach $300 million, a target previously thought fairly easy. The total currently stands at $232 million.

Everyone in my town rushed to see it (matrix) in the first few days. I've never had to park a block away from the theater to watch a movie before! I don't know if any other movie, besides for the third installment, will do that again, ever.

The two movies cost approximately $300 million to make, so if you split that down the middle, each cost $150M.
 
I didn't think it was crap. People expect it to break all sorts of new ground in special effects, editing, and action sequences. Sequels generally don't do that.

hehe, it's actually not that hard to say that Finding Nemo is an all-around better movie...better storyline, great humor, gorgeous graphics. Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoyed Reloaded, but it had major flaws and just didn't fill you up like you'd expect a Matrix movie to.

nope. some people like it, some people don't. just like anything else. i myself didn't like it much the first time i want, but only because i was expecting something entirely different. but when i went to see it the second time (to figure out some details), i came out loving it - more so than the original.

That's still a $57million profit. For the second movie. Plus, the third movie was included in that cost meaning anything it makes is pure profit. I'd say that the Matrix sequels were (plural stated on purpose) definitely a success.
 
I think Reloaded will break 300 million if they do what they said they were going to do, ie show reloaded and revolutions back-to-back (with an intermission) at the theatres, just because some people will go out and devote an entire day to watching the matrix

I'm posting wirelessly from the line at the theater! (actually I'm in my backyard enjoying the weather...didn't want to freak you out too much 😉)
 
reloaded will get another bump when :revolutions comes out. Reloaded and Revolutions combined ticket sales will easily exceed $500 mill. not bad considering there are tons of money yet to be made on video/dvd release, toys, and other merchandise.


besides, :reloaded is an R rated film, to do as well as it's done is amazing. and it won't have the ticket resales that a G or PG film will have. my kids will want to see Nemo at least 3 or 4 times where they didn't even want to see reloaded.
 
I agree, they will make $500 mil combined on domestic release, a couple hundred mil overseas, and then a boat load on DVD sales and rentals.
