In fact, I think it's more damning that the church covered up the pedophilia of a minority of priests than it would be if it covered up a majority of priests doing it. Refusing to punish a minority of priests is slightly more despicable than refusing to punish a majority... because it's easier from a logistical perspective to remove a minority of priests than a majority.

And this is not to say that all other religious organizations, or any organization for that matter, doesn't have it's share of issues, but the extremes they went through to save face by protecting these people is shameful.

Some people don't believe in shunning others if the need arise, but to keep said organization morally clean, this is a must! The heck with the embarrassment it would cause by getting rid of a sick priest, but in the long term, you protect the congregation and the people in it.. as well as your reputation.

The Catholic Church does have a lot of Biblical backing to say women should not lead congregations.

And yet, the Catholic Church fails to admit that gays have every right to be gay. They refuse to admit gays can parent as well as a man-woman couple. They cast a blind eye to the child rape occuring inside the church. Finally, most adherents preach love and forgiveness but would be more than happy to see their world views imposed on everyone, just like the religious zealots who follow Islam.

Most religious folks think they are completely rational, and are shocked when people get extremely mad at them.

The two items are not linked and I doubt you are saying that pedophilia and homosexuality are linked. They are both immoral sexual behaviors (according to the Church), though and as such both must be removed from the Church. The Church has its rules and most of these are well known to everyone who chooses to be a member of it. It is of import to note that a large disagreement led to the creation of Protestantism - and the deaths of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands throughout Europe.

I am hopefully optimistic that the new Pope will clean house of pedophiles.

Every human wants to see his own world view imposed on everyone else, it is just how humans work. If your worldview is that everyone must accept the beliefs of everyone else, then you are pushing that worldview onto those who do not agree. Right or wrong, it is just how humans roll.
