VATICAN CITY — Instead of the bus, a chauffeur. No longer a tiny apartment, but a penthouse suite. Not just a new name, but his own personal coat of arms.

Such are the perks and trappings of office being thrust upon Pope Francis as he assumes leadership of the Roman Catholic Church and its 1.2 billion followers. There's just one catch: He may not want them.

Like a man who has won the lottery against his will, the new pontiff has already begun refusing some of the privileges that come with his new job, in keeping with the austere, almost ascetic ways he has pursued up to now as a Jesuit priest.

/sniped A well written article.

seems A pope who understands it. One who thinks all the gold, all teh BS is wrong.

One of the things that made me disgusted with the church was every picture you see of the hirachy was all the gold and huge palace etc.

Wonder if he has the same idea on the Child abuse. if its good that is a good move for the church.

I'm thinking Pope Francis may be the best Pope in quite some time and will do the right things to help the church.

i think how he reacts to the child rape issue is the huge one. He sure looks like he could be the best for along time.

Just what the church needs at this time.

Everything I have read about the man screams reform of the church's bad ways. He is very conservative, so do not expect a woman priest or the handing out of birth control.

My wife mentioned he could be the anti-Christ or false prophet, with how so many people who normally have an irrational hatred of the Catholic Church are optimistically in love with the guy. :)

I like his style. Humbleness, in words with action to confirm it, always impresses me.

This guy should make a really good Pope. He is a very humble man. Hopefully he helps to improve the image of the church and help to grow it.

Too much emphasis is put on the office of Pope, and never enough on their Savior, Jesus.

Once these titles are removed and Jesus has his rightful place as leader of their Church (and not the Pope), then I'd say they are starting to get it. As long as the office of Pope is the mediator between "us" and God , they won't ever get it.

As of today, the Pope's still their leader. This is evident in that we hear and read much, much more about him than Jesus from within even their own ranks.

As someone who laughs at the idea of a god existing, I don't hate the catholic church at all. I think religion as a whole, when truly practiced as intended is a great thing. Someone like Francis is probably going to be great because being in power isn't about having power and possessions.

Any religion that calls its leader "holy Father", which is in violation of what Jesus said about calling humans on earth your "father" (in a religious sense, of course), doesn't get it.

I don't see Francis abandoning that term. He needs to remind Catholics not to call him that, nor even Pope.

Didn't Nostradamus make a famous prediction that the 112th pope (this one) would be the last due to the downfall of the catholic church?

edit: ok, it was St. Malachy who prophesied that the 112th would be the last, along with the downfall of the Catholic Church and other assorted craziness. For more info:

Why would you even consider caring for one minute?

All he needs to do is keep his dick out of children's mouths to exceed my expectations.

That would mean they would have to break Church tradition and allow them to marry. Priests marrying isn't scripturally wrong. In fact, Paul wrote that one wanting office of overseer must be husband of one wife, if he so chooses to marry. 1 Timothy 3:2.

Yeah, I bet Catholics know Peter was married, though they don't allow preists to marry. Yeah, tradition trumps the Bible with them. Forbidding to marry and abstaining from foods was among the teachings of demons. 1 Timothy 4:1-4.

When they actually read their Bibles and listen to that, and stop treating some old man as if he's Jesus reincarnate, then they'll start to get it.

It's in the Bible, so I'm just reading what's written.

How is that playing God? Am I the one claiming that I speak with infallibility when speaking on issues of morality?

It's also written in the Bible to leave all judgement unto God. So you're no better than the Catholics as you're judging them when God said that was for him to do, not Rob M.

You know maybe the Catholic Church is right. Maybe you should be "teaching the controversy" in your church?

Plus if you believe in being saved, maybe you should be Catholic because what if just accepting JC isn't enough? What if you have to do good works and confess your sins or go to hell. Is that a wager you're willing to make?

It sounds like what you are basically saying is the God is an idiot. You do realize that Catholicism was essentially Christianity for centuries right?

Maybe *gasp* people need a spiritual leader that they can actually physically see? If Catholicism was so far off the mark why did God allow it to exist as essentially the only Christian church for 1000+ years?
