but it was more like a death sentence...no?

i mean, if the rookie hadn't come after denzel and tried to shoot him after that , wouldn't he perhaps still be working for him?
 
i agree - I think it would have been better, though a little predictable, if he had of stayed a "bad" but good cop. He really wasn't very nice in that movie.

Nope, at that point Denzel had seen him as a potential problem (from the way he acted when they killed Denzel's "friend") and basically had the Mexicans kill him.

That would have (as you said) made it just another cookie cutter cop drama...aka typical Hollywood garbage...The way that Denzels character evolves into this personification of evil as the movie goes on is what makes it (to me) even scarier. He starts out as a not so nice guy (in the diner) then he evolves into a crooked cop then a cold blooded murderer (the film eventually makes it obvious that this was not the first time he has killed). For me, being used to Denzel being the "good guy", this film was a welcome shock to the system. Well written, acted and directed. It's no "Godfather" but it is definately on my short list of DVDs to buy.
 
Entertaining flick but the ending was a disapointment..the movie did underscore the futility of "the war on drugs".
 
I quite enjoyed the movies.

One of the better movies I've seen in the last year.

With the likes of LotR on the charts, it's obviously not the best but I quite enjoyed it.
 
I just finished watching it on DVD, and found it extremely entertaining and suspenseful. Snoop Dog in the wheel chair coughing up rocks, and Macy Gray wanting a copy of the search warrant, lol. I didn't catch on to Denzel playing "the bad guy" until he actually shot at Hoyt in his apartment. I just assumed it was all part of Hoyt's training. Overall it was a two thumbs up from me.

i thought it was a pretty good movie...not worth owning on DVD in my opinion, but still a very good rental 😀
 
hehe, i finally rented it. the movie was pretty interesting, but does leave you conflicted. the street justice most people don't look down too much on, but probably feel he takes it a little too far i guess.

btw i recognized the "smiley" guy. the latino guy that holds a shotgun to ethan hawks head in the bathtub. the guys a freakin New Zealander 😉 i know this cuz of the blow dvd where he played pablo escabar. he normally speaks like zena(lucy lawless) hah, pretty kewl🙂
 


<< what is not to like about the movie? ask yourself this. throughout the movie, did you or did you not agree with denzel's method of street justice? did you at times find yourself disagreeing because legally it's not right, yet at times you find yourself cheering that denzel beat the crap out of those 2 homeless guys? the way the movie puts you on the line and you're torn between which side to step over is different from the crap you always see in other movies. it makes you question your own belief. this sort of self interaction is totally awesome considering you don't just sit blindly through a movie.

for me, throughout the whole movie, i kept trying to justify denzel's action. first because it's how the streets are run and then later because maybe denzel is going to the extremeties to "test" the rookie. by the end i couldn't believe what a total jackass he was. totally awesome IMO. i might buy the dvd. >>

This movie rocked btw. It's great fodder for getting under by brother in-law's skin. He's a cop btw.
 
That movie was very good.


It's funny to see how obvoius it is that to some people a movie sucks unless it has a happy, feel-good, ending.

For example the movie Very Bad Things was a twisted, dark, fantastic comedy. Nothing turned out well for anyone in the movie. While the movie completely kicked as$, some people just can't take it and have said it's the worst movie they ever seen. Of course they only base that on the fact that there's nothing happy about the ending. Same thing with Requiem for a Dream.
 
i dunno...the plot started unwinding towards the end and it just got stupid.
had such high hopes for this movie too.
 
I thought it was a good movie. The extra stuff on the DVD such as the alternate ending on the DVD was also interesting. But they should've shown some sort of flashback when talking about what happened in Vegas(when those cops met at the resturant), at least so we could get a picture of how serious Denzels situation really was.
 
We must have some really stupid people in here. I mean come on who couldn't tell that Denzel was "evil" from the preview, and was setting up Ethan. The whole movie was done in the preview.

Very Bad Things wasn't bad because of the ending (I wouldn't know, couldn't make it that far through it). It was bad because every character in the movie was a fcking moron. I mean, every choice they had, they chose wrong. It was so frustrating, my gf and I were SCREAMING at the TV. We had to turn it off less than 45 minutes into it. If this is the kind of interaction you enjoy in a a film, more power to you. But personally, I just find it frustrating.

OTOH, both Training Day and Requiem were excellent films, highly deserving the critical acclaim both received.

I'm a die hard SW fan and I know plenty about all types of movies..
 
I too thought it was a sucky movie. Nobody deserved any sort of awards for it. It was a lowlife movie for lowlife thugs. LOL.
