Your first build and you have almost 1,000 posts? lol

Looks pretty good, I would go DFI and OCZ memory, but I'm a fanboy. Not much to know other than readin the build guides on various forums (ehm DFI-Street)

lol, well I need a computer and I want a good one this time around and it makes so much more sense to dyi then buying a prebuilt, and there's a first time for everything right?

dfi street is mostly useless for those with problems with their motherboard. been there done that. why opteron 165, will you OC on your first build? if not then u shoulda saved some money and got the 3800... but o well no big deal. be aware that the centurion 5 only has an 80mm fan in the front which doesn't cool the hard drive too well since its not attached via screws (heat transfer to case for better cooling). my friends WD caviar 160gb 7200 8mb hard drive idles at 55-60C when his cpu idles at 35... so gl with that. with that budget i woulda gone with an x1800 or x1900 depending if you could squeeze it out for better image quality in games..

well, I've been overclocking, just not with a computer I built myself.

FSP400-60GLN instead of AX450-PN (more reliable, same power)

Samsung SP2504C instead of WD (quieter)

CM Cent 5 only has an 80mm fan in the front, some area of which is blocked by the I/O "plate".

D-Link isn't the most reliable, so I hear.

Does Samsung make reliable hard drives though?

Well, I haven't heard of any problems, but that's not a very good indicator of quality.

What about seagate, they're good right?
edit: I was looking at this hdd Seagate
I couldn't find the samsung at either of the 2 stores I was buying from so I looked at a comparable seagate.

I know for sure ZZF carries the Samsung. It doesn't really matter if you order from ZZF separately (if you're going with mwave or whichever company) since they've got free shipping on it. Unless, of course, you have to pay tax.

Love these generalized comments. Just make random comments out of thin air, eh?

It really depends on the drive. There is nothing that says Samsung is more reliable than any other brand. Western Digital makes fine drives, among the best. I doubt he would notice a difference. As for quiet, what good is a quiet hard drive when your fans make so much noise and your case releases all that noise? An extra decibel or two is not a deal killer, at least in my opinion.

It really depends on your usage, luck and other factors when it comes to reliability. It is not set in stone, for the most part.

It's not useless. I have 1,300+ posts there. It's the best support site out there. Certainly better than anandtech, no offense guys.

1) Samsung SpinPoints are quieter than all the other 7200 RPM drives.

2) I feel like the quietness of WD and Seagates really vary alot by model, I have a 7900.9 which I find to be very quiet. My Raptor is the loudest of my hard drives, but even then, I dont think it is very loud.

3) Don't listen to LOUISSSSS

4) I prefer cases with 120mm fans.

Actually looks like a very solid build.

My suggestions:

Since you're paying the premium for an Opteron 165, I assume you're interested in overclocking. In that case, I would emphatically suggest the DFI Ultra-D over the A8N-SLI. The A8N is known for baseline stability, not overclocking. Also, I would highly suggest G.Skill DDR500 for the overclocking headroom. The price point is actually about the same. Finally, I would highly suggest shelling out the extra $20 for the Lian Li PC-7B Plus II on Newegg. It's fully aluminum, great build quality and uses 2 120mm fans. Much better value and a much better case.

What's to rule out the possibility of him wanting to make his system as silent as possible, in the future? After you replace the fans with something quieter, go for a quiet PSU, etc. hard drives tend to be the last "loud" component. If he gets what's commonly accepted to be the quietest 3.5" drive now, he won't have to replace it later _if_ that happens.

1. link?
3. cry
4. nobody really asked what you prefer, OP the coolermaster centurioun 5 is a great case, easy to use, good quality etc, but as i stated before the front 80mm fan might not be sufficient to cool your hard drive(s)
