My shoulder has been a pain in the ass for about 6 months now and I'm finally going to get it checked out on thursday.

I'm really hoping that he doesn't just say "Tendonitis, Rest it".

Update, 9/11

Doc thinks its possibly a labrum tear. MRI is scheduled for tuesday.

I will be surprised if part of the doc's advice isn't to rest it and/or light duty for 4-6 weeks. As frustrating as that is, it is better than anything invasive becoming necessary, imo. I know boxing with a bad shoulder is not fun either, hang in there man.

I haven't done any boxing or volleyball in about 2 months.

So what have you been doing that involves your shoulder? Anything? Have you been icing it?

I've still been lifting, but trying to avoid a ton of lifts that put stress on it. I stopped icing it a while ago because it's rarely "painful". It bothers me, and feels like it itches underneath my skin. It also clicks, cracks, and pops like crazy.

That itching feeling, at least in my experience, is usually indicative as a strain. Also, if you've had shoulder pain, you probably should've stopped lifting (I know it can be hard). Clicking and the like are also a bad sign. You may have shoulder impingement, which would continually be aggravated by lifting, but wouldn't feel much different. To be honest, it sounds like the best case scenario would be tendinitis. You may have something worse, but either way you're gonna have to rest it. I tried to ignore my shoulder irritation. I've found it's not the best way to deal with things. Good luck anyhow, man. Hope it's something minor.

Well I have not worked out in over a week now and it feels like crap. I think that there are 2 things going on. Bicep tendinitis and whatever other mystery ailment, because I can follow the bicep tendon to one problem spot in the shoulder that seems to get better or worse with activity. Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow morning.

I had the EXACT same thing. Mine turned out to be bicep tendonitis caused by pec tightness. Pec minor tightness will give a really awkward pinchy pain. If you strengthen your rotator cuff and those small back muscles as well as stretch out the pec, you should start to feel better. I also had a bit of impingement though so things might be different for me. Anyhow, good luck.

Not sure if shoulder tendons are the same, but they may be: was the onset of this pain gradual and ignored and pushed through or immediate? If the former, you may have a tendinosis in the shoulder, assuming this is tendon related. A tendinosis will not generally recover by itself and can easily take months of specific therapy to address.

It goes without saying that unless the doctor is sure you need surgery, you should instead go to physical therapy and your new goal is getting the shoulder better, not "trying to deal with it" while lifting weights, for instance. I'm dealing with knee pain now for a few years and in the last year finally decided that my knee, not trying to deal with it, was the priority, so I cut out all my otherwise planned triathlons I would have done this year and have been diligently addressing it, and to good benefit. Goodluck!

Doc thinks its possibly a labrum tear. MRI is scheduled for tuesday. I have some RC cuff excersises that I can perform in the mean time.

That's what the doc thought mine was. Is it an MRI with contrast? If so, it's really fun :p Did he note any slippage or ease of pulling the joint out? Bicep tendon damage is common with a labrum tear as well though so it's plausible.

No slippage of the joint but there are some biceps tendon problems, which he obviously thinks is a result of a labrum issue. I believe that the MRI is with contrast.

MRI with contrast is less than fun. They stick a needle into your shoulder socket, inject the ink and then see if it leaks at all in the MRI. The doctor that did mine was a douche so I dunno if the doctor can make it less painful. They also have to x-ray it while doing it to make sure they get it in the right spot. It's not very fun at all.
