Finally getting around to rooting my Droid, which ROM to choose?

I've been running roms on my phone since about a week after getting it. Always liked ChevyNo1s' Simply Stunning and more often then not I end up on Petes' Bugless Beast. I did find that going from stock to SS and BB under 2.1 gained me around 3 hours or so battery life using Chevys 1.0GHz LV kernel. Then when the 2.2s came around, I still end up back and forth between the 2, but noticed that after taking the phone off the charger at 5am, going to work, texting all day, watching revision 3 shows over 3g on 15m breaks and lunch, then getting home and texting some more, browsing the web quite a bit over the day and sleeping, the phone still held 40% when i woke up the following morning at 5am. It didnt drop to 20% until around noon when I started watching a show on lunch. My battery life has nearly doubled between 2.1 and 2.2 on both SS and BB.

Right now I'm on BB 0.4 with a 1.0ghz kernel and tomorrow I'll likely give the new SS another chance. I generally switch roms every 2 weeks or so now (as opposed to every 2-3 days when I was just getting into it). My phone only has one issue and thats heat. But it's always suffered from the problem since the original stock rom all the way through now, no matter the kernel, or rom. I plan to get a replacement unit eventually, but not today. Still works like a charm, even in the very high 40s

Is there a way to store sms/mms to SD? The only annoying thing for me is moving my SMS/MMS archives with me from rom to rom.

there are sms backup programs but I'm assuming that you already have that?

Update on my memory card issue, since I know all you guys are so interested. I bought a new 16gb card, and I have the exact same issue! SPrecovery exits with status 31 when trying a backup, and fails doing most update.zip installs. Clockworkmod recovery locks up after a few seconds and then reboots the phone. But once I'm in the OS, the card has no issues at all.

If I try sprecovery and clockworkmod with my old 4gb card installed I have absolutely no issues at all doing anything. I'm guessing this is phone related somehow. Problem is, it's not like I'm going to be able to get Verizon to replace it by saying "uh yea, my phone has issues flashing roms with 16g microsd cards."

Most backup problems have issues with rooted ROMs. Titanium does ok, but its even flaky at times.

What ROM are you trying to flash? What phone? How do you have the SD paritioned?

Details are important.

Moto Droid, the SD card is right out of the package freshly formatted by the phone, not partitioned at all. Sapphire is installed, but I had these problems with any ROM. I had the error 31 backup problems in sprecovery and the reboot problem with clockworkmod before I even installed a custom ROM or kernel. I rooted and installed a custom ROM on my wife's phone the other day, same setup as mine with no issues at all.

I can help lots more with HTC phones. I know the Droid has some steps that HTC's don't.

I think I cut down on my homescreen redraw issues. I have ProLauncher installed, and sure enough, even after a fresh ROM and messing with the Launcher settings, it started to redraw. So I cut out some widgets, and cut it down to 3 homescreens instead of 5 or 7. I made use of the swiping icons on the bottom. I tried PureMessenger. On top of PureCalendar, the RAM had hard time swapping resources. So uninstalled it for a refund. Ashame, because it was cool. The FB and Twitter widgets combined don't take the resources PureMessenger did.
I love my Droid, but this device is older, and the only thing that makes it show it's age is the small amount of memory.

I did Cyanogen first (and what I'm on now), but it has performance issues I'm not happy with. It is very slow response times, and feels "laggy." I switched to JRummy's Kangerade and it's been beautiful for speed, looks, and feel. What sucks is the lack of built in features of Cyanogen that I miss.

I wish I could find a ROM that had the performance of Kangerade, but the features of Cyanogen (namely the options available).

Try cyanogen again and use Launcher Pro and not ADW. it works MUCH better

In case anyone is interested, I'm now running Ultimate Droid eXtreme 6.0 and it is the most stable ROM i've used to date. Combined with ChevyNo1's ultra low voltage 1.1 kernal, it runs cool, rock solid, and it is quite snappy. It is not on ROM Manager but you can get it from the ultimate droid site. Good stuff.
