why would I use an inferior MP3 player that requires me to run the risk of getting sued 8 ways to China for putting music in any other format than the one I buy it from (iTunes) when I can simply use Amazon or similar services, buy the MP3 outright and not worry about all the obnoxious hassle of switching formats and ripping it to MP3 when I want to put it on a CD for a car, etc.

😕

MP3s work just fine on iPods and iPhones. Why would you get sued for putting MP3s you legally purchased or ripped onto an iPod?

Some people are just lol.

HEY EVERYONE, BILLY MAYS HERE! ARE YOU TIRED OF CARRYING AROUND ONLY ONE MP3 PLAYER THAT ALSO WORKS AS A PHONE? WELL DO I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR YOU! YOU CAN CARRY AROUND 3 DIFFERENT ITEMS AND CONTINUE TO LEGITIMATELY TRY TO MOCK IPHONE USERS! THE SMUG FEELING YOU GET WHEN YOU TRY TO ACT BETTER THAN IPHONE USERS IS PRICELESS!

Huh? I have a Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone that is half the size of I-phone and plays MP3s just fine and has regular headphone jack.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_5310
I-phone is more for data features, you don't need one to play music on your phone.

Nokia OS is laughable. So unintuitive. The browser is fugly.

Oh, and one year old news update, the iPhone has a standard headphone jack. The 3G eliminated the recessed jack.

So? It's 1/2 the size of I-phone. I use it as a phone and mp3 player, which it does a great job of without having to carry the added bulk of the I-phone. Maybe if Apple comes out with an I-phone nano, I'd be interested.

I used to own 4 different versions of blackberry Saga, and I prefer my iphone in every way over it now. It's perfectly loud...battery life is fine, I can go 2 days standby, and 5-8 hours of actual usage on the phone...depending if I am playing a game, or just browsing email over edge.

Shit, I can remote into my server at home via VPN, with IRDesktop, name a litlte device that can do that, please.

Sorry, but I can't think of a single situation where I would, given the option, use an iPhone to VPN into my work network when I could simply excuse myself and boot up a laptop to do the task legitimately. I'm on call 24/7, I'm pretty sure if I was stuck on the top of Mt. Fuji with just my iPhone I'd turn on the GPS to use the phone to melt ice for water and to keep me warm while I waited for the chopper to come save my ass so I could get to a laptop as opposed to VPNing in at that time.

Saga, you are proving your ignorance rather than their ignorance.

1) Wrong. iPhone playing music will chug along for 20 hours.
2) Apps are great, I actually agree.
3) Apps are useful -- Google Earth, Mint, Bank of America, Facebook, Maps, Weather, ... don't base your decision on the fact that you probably have five flashlight apps downloaded.
4) The original iPhone was plagued with volume issues. Remember that was their first phone, and Blackberry is roughly 20 generations ahead. The 3GS has addressed those issues. The Blackberry is already behind Apple, and has adapted their hardware and software to mimic Apple's.
5) Streaming Pandora is not a novelty, it is a legitimate feature. They sell iPhone arm straps that are unobtrusive.

$40 is not ridiculously expensive. Fuck, even $70/month for a stand alone plan is not ridiculously expensive when a Blackberry is $80/month.

People who hate on the iPhone are some of the most ridiculous haters out there. They try so hard to bring it down. Its rather hilarious

I mean seriously, what are you beefs with the iPhone, and what is the better alternative that solves ALL of your issues with the iPhone?

Well, prior to the 3GS: no copy/paste, no picture/video messaging, only on AT&T (or unlocked for T-Mobile), touchscreen (although the best touchscreen out there), and some other stuff (which I can't seem to remember).

Now, with the 3GS: only on AT&T, and touchscreen (maybe some other stuff, but I can't seem to remember/think of it off hand).

The 3GS is a phone that I would most likely buy if it were available on Verizon. I hate AT&T's network with a passion, so I won't own one until Verizon gets it (if that ever happens). My BB Curve has issues sure, but prior to the 3GS it was the better phone for me.

Symbian was years ahead of other Phone OSs for a long time. Apple could still learn a thing or two from it.

Plus my phone has actual buttons for play pause and fast forward, and an FM tuner, not something to be found on a 2x as big I-phone.

that's nice. Now find all the 7-11's within 5 miles of you and get directions there. While you're there, yelp any restaurants that are nearby with a $ rating and that's currently open. Finally, while you're there, take a picture of your meal and post it to facebook. You should also check ATOT while you're at it, in case the plane takes off.

For added lulz, as I posted earlier, my iphone is fubar'ed - I took my GF's iphone, recorded a video of mine being fubar'ed, and uploaded it directly to youtube.

soooooo can your half sized iphone do all that?

the only way i'll ever buy an iphone is if it comes with a slideout qwerty keyboard... i did the touchscreen texting thing with my samsung instinct and i hated it.

palm pre is where it's at.

I'm not sure I've found the features you refer to -- features that Apple could learn from. In my use of the new 5800 MusicXpress, I've been nothing but frustrated. The map app is horrendous with might-as-well-not-exist location search. Everything is buried in menus.

What about a scientific calculator? Landscape web browsing? Twitter feeds? Text messaging organized in conversations? Local weather without opening the browser? Zzzz. Your phone could be paper thin and still suck.

I thought I'd dislike using the touchscreen as a keyboard but I've actually found with the touchscreen I can type faster.

Well when you pay just $20 a month for unlimited data, 200 Text messages on your Windows Mobile phone (not including minutes portion), it makes the iPhone and Blackberrys look wayyy overpriced. I'd say the worst part about the iPhone is Steve Jobs' need to control people and how his products function. When ever people make a complaint on this forum, you guys always direct them to some halfassed-hack in order to get it done and while that may seem fine and dandy, it's also a great way to brick the phone thanks to, well Steve Jobs once again (kill switch anyone?).

For those who are wondering what I'm talking about in terms of the kill switch:

Anytime something like Twitter is touted as a feature I lose more faith in humanity.

I don't use Twitter, but I thought it'd be a selling point for you. You seem like that type.

The kill switch is an excellent feature to stop virus-laden software. It was not implemented to brick unlocked iPhones, and will never be used for that purpose.

The only one complaining about unlocked phones is AT&T. Apple is happy, more sales. Further, it is AT&T that presses Apple to patch the firmware holes. My opinion is that Apple will never fully seal the iPhone.

The iPhone is an amazing device and the only thing keeping me from getting it is the high monthly cost of the required data plan. It wouldn't even be that big a deal if I was already paying full price for a standard phone plan, but I'm still on a family plan so a jump from $10/mo to $80/mo is just too high.

BTW, you can upgrade your family plan line to an iPhone line for $30 per month, so $40 total. Not a great price, but still 1/2 of the $80 / month.

We're on Verizon. Contract isn't up until October. I'll run that by the fam and see how things work out. Generally, Verizon has been pretty good. When we switched to them, one of the biggest advantages was their reception in our semi-rural neighborhood, but we were switching from Sprint and that was several years ago. No doubt things have changed quite a bit since then.

I just realized I could probably justify an iPhone if I were to downgrade my Internet access. But I'm not sure I want to do that... I actually do use and appreciate what I have now (7 Mbit DSL from Qwest). And downgrading to 1.5 Mbit would only save me $15 or $20 a month.

Until you twitter about your opinions about each other. Then it's on the record.

Goddamnit, you made me laugh when I had my serious face on!

I have no problem with the iPhone and think it's a pretty awesome device. I do find some of their douchebag owners to be quite hilarious though.

I can't live without my phone. I use beejive IM (best IM out there for the iphone 3.0 OS), Tweetie, Facebook, GV mobile (for any google voice users), Google app (for voice searches), RedLaser (barcode scanning that works if you have a 3GS), U-verse TV (managing my DVR on the go), cardstar (I hate carrying around those store cards), and midomi (find out what i'm listening too).

My biggest beef with the iPhone is that you're forced to sign up with that rancid abortion of a cell phone carrier, AT&T. Next, I don't need anything more than a phone. I don't have to be constantly busy with email and internet and IM and MP3s and blah and blah and blah and blah. My cell phone makes phone calls and handles text messages. It was also practically free. I have unlimited everything (legit unlimited, not unlimited after a certain time of day or some shit), and my bill is nice and cheap.

The iPhone is like the iMac: bloated, overpriced, overhyped, and for metrosexuals only.
