The dazzle wears off relatively quickly if you aren't a trendy college kid trying to use it as a fashion accessory.

you uh, never use it as an ipod?

I have a Sansa for when I jog, why would I use an inferior MP3 player that requires me to run the risk of getting sued 8 ways to China for putting music in any other format than the one I buy it from (iTunes) when I can simply use Amazon or similar services, buy the MP3 outright and not worry about all the obnoxious hassle of switching formats and ripping it to MP3 when I want to put it on a CD for a car, etc.

Both of my cars have MP3 capable OEM decks with CD changers so I don't need to make it look trashy with an Aux cable plugged into an iPod.

Last I checked there was a real easy way to make an MP3 when you want in iTunes. You right click, and hit "convert to MP3." Not too hard.

And as far as "looking trashy with an Aux cable"....having two phones doesn't make you look trashy? And I personally find it annoying to have to burn CDs. Having a huge case of CDs with MP3s on it vs. having an iPhone with a short, retractable cable to carry around all of your music, listen to tons of radio not provided normally (Pandora, Public Radio Tuner, etc.).

Your call.

EDIT: Looks like I took too long and NS1 beat me to the punch.

😕

MP3s work just fine on iPods and iPhones. Why would you get sued for putting MP3s you legally purchased or ripped onto an iPod?

Think he's just making up reasons to fuel his hatred.

I don't have an iphone, but I've had an ipod for 4 or 5 years now and I've *NEVER* purchased anything from itunes. All the music I have on my iPod is stuff that I've purchased and ripped to mp3.

HEY EVERYONE, BILLY MAYS HERE! ARE YOU TIRED OF CARRYING AROUND ONLY ONE MP3 PLAYER THAT ALSO WORKS AS A PHONE? WELL DO I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR YOU! YOU CAN CARRY AROUND 3 DIFFERENT ITEMS AND CONTINUE TO LEGITIMATELY TRY TO MOCK IPHONE USERS! THE SMUG FEELING YOU GET WHEN YOU TRY TO ACT BETTER THAN IPHONE USERS IS PRICELESS!

I mean seriously, what are you beefs with the iPhone, and what is the better alternative that solves ALL of your issues with the iPhone?

Jell - us - Eee.

Not really. Because a lot of phones running other platforms have superior hardware. All the iPhone 3GS really boasts hardware-wise right now is its CPU and GPU. However there's other Cortex A8 smartphones out there (Pre, Omnia HD).

BTW, IM+ still has some issues. 3.1 finally enabled push but I've read about a lot of complaints about it half working and what not. I suggest sticking to Beejive 3.0. It's a much cleaner interface although it seems more CPU demanding than IM+.

I don't use it Push actually... mostly because I don't really understand exactly what it does 😱. I would rather it just work like my old WinMo phone and leave everything connected because I left them connected for a reason.

It wouldn't even be that big a deal if I was already paying full price for a standard phone plan, but I'm still on a family plan so a jump from $10/mo to $80/mo is just too high.

BTW, you can upgrade your family plan line to an iPhone line for $30 per month, so $40 total. Not a great price, but still 1/2 of the $80 / month.

push = it pushes the message to your phone when you receive one

If you're not in push, you're in fetch mode, which means it'll only fetch new data when you tell it to (which by default is manually)

Fixed for ya. Ok but I seriously wonder. When you see those RIAA threads pop up people flame them to death like downloading is no matter. Then when people talk about iPhones and iPods and MP3s people talk about how they rip their 1000 CD collection and put it on their iPods. Just like that rom thread and people would go off about their "backups."

That's one of the reasons I haven't switched to an iPhone.

The other reason is that I really don't *need* an iphone. I get by just fine with my cell phone (which I barely use, except for texting) and ipod (which stays in my desk when I'm at work).

You mindless drones go ahead and continue to pay $140+/m for your precious Apple toys. When work finally stops requiring I have one for testing mine will be promptly dropped off a building for the pure entertainment value of taping it and putting the video online to watch elitist apple snobs cry like babies.

I agree, except I have the 150+ cd collection to back it up =P

Huh? I have a Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone that is half the size of I-phone and plays MP3s just fine and has regular headphone jack.

I-phone is more for data features, you don't need one to play music on your phone.

Bad math is bad.

If you are paying $10 for your line on the family plan, there would only be a $30 per month increase by adding an iPhone. $10 for the line + $30 for iPhone data.

Text messaging is optional, unless you already pay for unlimited family texts.

Nokia OS is laughable. So unintuitive. The browser is fugly.

Oh, and one year old news update, the iPhone has a standard headphone jack. The 3G eliminated the recessed jack.

Yea, this jerk-off is going to destroy hardware worth hundreds of dollars. So who is the smart one?

Well that just doesn't make sense...

Just because it's an electronic you can't afford, doesn't mean you need to bash it, har har.

Plus I only pay 60 bucks a month having it on TMobile with EDGE...with 2 phone lines.

Ignorance is ignorant. I'm open to any device, I simply see no need in attempting to justify the iPhone as some magical all-in-one wonder, when it's not.

1) I find the ridiculously low battery life of the iPhone for it's various purposes annoying - I don't think I should need to carry around some method of charging the thing every 60 minutes, and my Sansa lasts over 10 hours without needing to be plugged in.
2) Apps are great, games are fun when I need to waste some time and sure as hell blow RIM's brickbreaker out of the water, so from an entertainment platform it's superior. I can't even name the amount of times I've needed a random app such as the leveling app when I couldn't find a goddamn level during our move. Simple things like that are great, but for the most part the apps are very short-lived and just that - situational entertainment.
3) I would definitely browse the internet over the iPhone instead of the Blackberry, though I admit to not really liking Safari and wishing there was a legitimate alternative.
4) As a phone the iPhone is downright atrocious. Even at it's loudest setting it's not louder than my Blackberry at 1/3rd volume, which makes using it in a loud server room or noisy locations absolutely pointless. The only saving grace is that I use a rubber external case to protect the back from scratches and it sits nicely on my shoulder so if I want to put the phone on speaker and type while I talk that works great. Despite being such a quiet speaker the phone lasts almost two hours less than my Blackberry for battery life, so if I am making a ridiculous amount of phone calls in the day I better have a charger handy or it simply doesn't stack up.
5) It's a great MP3 player and the sound quality is superb, however the interface leaves much to be desired and outside novelty's such as being able to stream Pandora my micro MP3 player is superior because it can easily be strapped to an arm when I run or work out - and the best thing is I don't care if that small piece of crap falls or gets dropped, it brushes off a scratch or two on the plastic and doesn't run the risk of cracking a fancy touch screen.

I carry two phones because I'm forced to, but one is never visible so nobody even knows I have an iPhone until (and if) I need to use it. It's absolutely not some holy grail, it's ridiculously expensive on a monthly basis, and it's limited in functionality unless you are always able to charge the device.

I used to own 4 different versions of blackberry Saga, and I prefer my iphone in every way over it now. It's perfectly loud...battery life is fine, I can go 2 days standby, and 5-8 hours of actual usage on the phone...depending if I am playing a game, or just browsing email over edge.

Shit, I can remote into my server at home via VPN, with IRDesktop, name a little device that can do that, please.

P.S. Our only option here is AT&T, and their base plan comes out to approximately $140/m including all taxes and surcharges, I don't even want to know what the other minute/text plans cost.

Sigh. So much ignorance.
