The GOP took a vicious PR beating during their most recent fiscal "stands" culminating in the government shutdown. Not willfully repeating those mistakes before the midterms is probably a good idea.

Awfully nice of Boner to get his shit together and do his job. Pity it couldn't have happened years ago.

He should be used to teatards trying to stick things in his back by now though.

He can't get 218 of his own party members to vote for a debt ceiling increase. He's lucky to get a clean increase. Democrats could have demanded conditions of their own for bringing the votes that Boehner can't deliver.

It's an election year.

Can't rock the boat during an election year. Fiscal responsibility will be back next year.

What? They're not going to hold it hostage until they get Christianity declared the State religion, slavery reenacted, the removal of all women's rights, and the elimination of taxes for the 1%?
What is this country coming to when one side gets everything and the other gets nothing?

Don't worry, we can always count on Ted Cruz to screw it up somehow.

Nope Ted is a pussy, he'll want someone else to do it for him. I'll give him credit for the traditional filibuster he did but it was simply an attention grab. He ultimately voted for the bill

No they shouldn't have. You don't fuck with the debt ceiling.

This is why this whole nonsense is so dangerous to begin with. You see one side making demands and then you want to do it right back at them as soon as the shoe is on the other foot. I get the gut inclination to do that, but it's deeply misguided and really irresponsible.

They could demand sequester repeal as part of the debt ceiling increase, just like Republicans demanded sequester as part of it. But of course they are too responsible for that.

That's a good thing.

The question of how to deal with an opponent who will rationalize rather than reason, who is so devoted to his team that he will vote against the best interests of the very people who elected him, fascinates me. Generally, I think, we motivate by carrot and stick. I love your deep rationality and the level of knowledge you bring to it, and your determination to stick to it. Perhaps it's best that the stick come from the electorate. Still, I think to the other side it looks like nothing but weakness, they are so far gone.

The thing is that their electorate by and large WANTS them to breach the debt ceiling. In many ways they are representing the wishes of their constituents despite the fact that those constituents want something that is insane.

Even if the other side looks at reason as weakness, becoming equally unreasonable isn't the answer. Like with most relationships I think you just need to manage your interactions with them and keep if so they do as little damage as possible.

It was the democrats who opposed freeing the slaves.

Get your facts straight.
History happens, champ. "Democrat" doesn't mean the same thing in 2014 as it did in 1860, or even in 1950, as you damned well know. Or maybe it's just a liberal conspiracy to write history books that include the New Deal, the split of the States Rights Democratic Party from the Democratic Party in 1948, and the switch of the Southern states from voting Democrat to Republican after the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and throughout segregation. And the GOP chairman apologized to the NAACP and other minority groups for the party's history of exploiting racism and ignoring the black vote in 2005 for absolutely no reason as well, or maybe it just didn't happen.

^Oh brother, not this revisionist bullshit again. This time with even more made-up, oversimplified bullshit! LOL!

Give it a rest already. The Democrat party's record on race absolutely stinks- stop trying to pawn it off on Republicans.

Really?

1860s democrats fought against freeing the slaves.

1940s president fdr (democrat) signed an executive order detaining Japanese-Americas to detainment camps.

2008 - 2014 - obama kills US citizens with drone strikes and refuses to close gitmo.

Please tell me again how democrats have changed?

Well I sure can't argue with that airtight logic!

The debt ceiling shouldn't be raised, spending needs to be cut and it's irresponsible to raise the debt ceiling.
