Finally a A10-8800P laptop for same at Newegg. But how fast is it?

If you were me would you wait until black Friday before buying anything?

Personally, if I were in the market for a gaming laptop, I would jump on that 799.00 Dell without a second thought. I doubt you will find a better deal even on BF, and if you do, you risk it being sold out or having to stand in line for hours.

You people do realize that the AMD FX-8800P is 15-35W TDP while the Intel i5-6300HQ is 45W TDP ??

Not to mention the 960M is 75W TDP alone.

So yes the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK is faster but its in another category than the AMD APU and the Intel 15W Core i3.

If the OP doesnt care about Battery life then the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK is the faster Laptop but if he cares about battery life that is not the Laptop to get.

I honestly don't know where people get the power numbers for Mobile Nvidia gpus and they don't seem to be using much logic either.

The 960m is not 75W TDP. You realize that Nvidia lists the 750 TI as 60W TDP? Realistically speaking does it look like the 960m is 75W TDP?

According to a manufacturer of the MXM module, it's 65W.

The 960M is the same 640 shader GM107 die as the 750Ti, clocked at 1.1GHz vs 1.02GHz in the 750Ti. It's not unreasonable to expect similar TDPs.

60 vs 75 watts is splitting hairs when comparing it to the 15-35w window.

I have to admit, this interests me greatly! It edges out the ~15W Intel i5 mobiles with Iris 540 graphics so we've got some competition in the efficiency category. Now we'll see who can do this for a lower price! :)

That's just saying the board rating for MXM is 75W, not that the 960m is 75W. It says the same for the 950M and 940M, even though the TDP of the 950M is 10W less and the 940M is 36W.

The 940M appears wrong though, since I'm quite sure the 940M is GM108.

940M is GM107 N16S-GT1-KB-B with only 384 cores vs 640 cores on the 950M/960M.

Those specs seem unlikely, since they list the same GM107 die as the 950m and 960m, say it has 640 shaders and show the picture of the 148mm^2 die, but call it N16S when GM107 is N16P. 970M/980M is N16E, and 930M and 940M are N16S.

Clearly from nVidia's images on its own site, that's not the case.

You can also see it in the images of the GPUs built into cards.

It's not impossible that nVidia has put out multiple cards called the 940m though. :p

Edit:
TPU also has another 940M page showing the GM108 die.

Well either way the 940M is not the same as 950M/960M.

To conclude, the 960M is 75W TDP by the links provided. Even if it is 60W TDP, add the 45W TDP of the CPU and you are way past what the 15W TDP Laptops are.

So, the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK is actually a desktop replacement and not a low power high battery life competitor to the AMD FX-8800P or the Skylake 15W TDP Core i3/i5.

Nobody is agruing that the Dell is an ultrabook or similar. When not gaming though, the gpu will not be active and the cpu will not be using close to its full TDP either, so the battery life may be decent. While gaming, yes, it will use a lot more power, but game immensely better than either of those 15w cpus, even with a low end discrete. GT940M is 64 bit DDR3 after all.

You see. Power consumption matter only on desktop GPUs. There is a lot to learn, you just need to open your mind for new horizons.

Pay attention!

The point is also that TDP is rather pointless unless you are running programs like Furmark. What matters is the actual power consumption. Neither the CPU nor GPU will be burning anywhere close to their TDP while gaming. An APU however, will likely be power limited and using power nearly at its TDP.

Under gaming load senarios the 45W quad will probably be burning 25-35W and the 960m around 40W. The rest of the system will add around 15W for a total of 80-90W.

As far as power usage goes what really maters is what the OP wants. High power usage by itself means little, its generally the associated effects (low battery life, bulky and heavy) that matter to the end user.

It has a large battery. The GPU doesn't run unless you specify a demanding program to do so. It actually will outlast some ULV laptops, since they tend to come with pathetic batteries.
