Sorry, I shouldnt have said you need EVERY item to beat the game. Sephiroth actually goes down quite fast without the best Limit breaks and summons.

Actually thats another thing which always bothered me, that you need a special item to unlock the last Limit break. I hated that. Also that the best weapons for each character require some sort of messy convoluted quest.

I'm not much of a fan of VII. It's a good game but IV is by far my fav. Oddly, in recent years I got my Final Fantasy fix with Lost Odyssey. It's not a Final Fantasy, but it was made by FF designers and in my opinion got closer to the original formula than the last 3-5 actual FF releases. I still have my original PC version so I'm curious what will be different.

P.S. I loathe ATB. Gimmie full turn based gaming any day. This isn't an action game...stop rushing me. :)

Unfortunately Xenogears raised the bar for me to an unprecedented level far beyond what previously set by FF4 and FF6 and nothing else will ever have a chance for a fair comparison. Scratch that, Xenogears flat out BROKE the bar for me.

Have you tried Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii? At least from what I can gather, the company that made it (Monolith) is comprised of some of the same people that worked on Xenosaga and Xenogears.

EDIT:

To add, it's only on the Wii and only available at Gamestop in the United States.

Yeah... don't know how the hell people are so "ZOMG" over Aerith.

Palom & Porom and Rydia are far more tragic than anything in FF VII. Palom and Porom had to be one of the most depressing scenes in video games for me. Screw Aerith.

Probably because neither Palom, Porom nor Rydia died. :p Palom and Porom might have petrified themselves to stop the walls from crushing the group, but you see them again at the end, and they're also in the sequel.

True FFIV definitely had some fake outs but still the lost of 4 major characters over the course of the game forced gamers to constantly adjust how they handled combat. I think Aerith's loss had more emotional impact as a singular loss, but it had far less impact on actual gameplay. The fact that they came back only made it better, as they sacrified themselves and were ultimately redeemed because of it.

In the end none of this matters. I think it's great that so many people have fond memories of these games, regardless which. While I don't put FFVII on a pedestal like many people, it is a classic and it should be celebrated.

You don't know that at the time.

The biggest impact on gameplay was that you lost your primary healer like 1/3 of the way through the game. The rest of the game was just a DPS race, no strategy.

Healing is done cheap and easy with ALL-RESTORE. Which everyone can do. Aeris only had two healing abilities anyway (the 2nd of which you weren't likely to get in an average game), which required you to max out your limit bar which didnt happen often unless you gave her the Cover materia and a Hyper.

And theres plenty of strategy by using good combos to both protect and attack, ESPECIALLY with the emerald and ruby weapons which were added specifically because people complained about not being challenged enough.

The hardest part about the game was trying to kill ruby and emerald without ribbon and op summon/material combos.

I dont recall them doing too much that requires a ribbon. Its mostly the massive damage especially from counter attacks.

I just want to jot down a few thoughts on this remake. 1) I am happy. 2) The character booster scared me at the beginning. I thought it was basically a game genie type thing. If you read the description it just give you max HP/MP and gil. So, what I think is it just gives you YOUR maximum HP/MP and a chunk of gil up to a certain ceiling. Perhaps 50 000 gil or something. I wouldn't assume 9999999999 gil. Maybe I'm wrong. 3) Hopefully I'll be able to finish this version of the game. I own the PC version from way back and I got up to the 2nd phase of the boss battle but the game would freeze at the same point almost every time. I was so proud of my characters too! It seems like the cost will be very modest so even if the remake doesn't improve much upon the old game, I expect at least to be able to play it on modern hardware and operating systems easily. And if not, it was cheap. My purchase will also tell square that there is a market on the PC for quality games (not just graphics, GAMES!). EDIT: What gives, I had this laid out so nice and anandtech just made it into a big wall of text. grrrrrrr.

People that wanna cheat always figure it out anyways.

I've been through several times so I know I can beat the game the hard way. On the last run through I used a save editor to give me a Steal and some other junk right at the beginning. 99 Hypers. What else? Some crap, I forget.

PSA: Some of those early game monsters have NICE loot to take, like weapons and powerful combat items.

Hmm..so it's not really a remake - just a re-release [with a few features] similar to what GoG does for older PC titles to get them to run on modern day OS's. :)

If the price isn't too high - I'll definitely pick it up.

I never played FF9, couldn't finish the turd that is 8. But played FF1 to 10-X2 plus whatever number the 2nd one on PS2 was after X-12.

I played the earlier FF's on NES, GBA and emulators. Ditto for the Dragon Warriors.

I don't see why people are attacking FF7, it's a great game. I think it gets so much attention is the fact it was the first mass market game on CD media. It broke the bounders typically restraining RPG's due to memory limitiations associated with cartridge. It had cut scenes at the time which were mind blowing and had these OMG summons.

I think it's just a matter of personal preference on which game someone likes. I can't say myself if I played FF7 at the same age as FF2 and 3 on SNES if I would have thought the same of all the story lines. I still remember being livid at Kain for his double crosses and hating that little twister fucker Kefka. I never had such emtions for characters in a story line as these games had, but I can't say with 100% certainty it was the game, my age or a combination of both.

FF9 is worth finding and playing if you have a PS2. It is one of the best ones, mainly because it was a throwback to the old style of FF.

I loved it. Really great game.

I'd like to see SquareSoft release 9 and 10 for the PC. I never finished 12 or even played 13... I wanted to play X-2 to see the conclusion of the story but the chick intro stuff just made me turn it off.

X-2 was too girly but the job system has never been done better. You could switch roles in the middle of a battle and there were secret and super secret jobs for each character.

Am I the only one who really thinks FFVIII was the best? Squall > Cloud (Although I have no idea what Riona saw in him...)

I liked 8, however there was so many odd parts to the story... I still to this day do not understand the ending

/Kill boss who is trying to converge all times and universes
/Everything is odd and everyone running around looking for each other
/All the sudden everyone appears back at garden having a party

I personally really enjoyed 9 and 10. I did also enjoy #4, and I think 1 other one, but the number eludes me as I am uncertain which one it is, I think it is 6.

Never got to try my hand at 7, and 8 was good in the fact I liked squall and especially zell, how he woudl randomly box the air at times.

Yea... I felt a bit embaressed buying it at a store when it came out because it was all girls on the cover and in the game.

Paradigm Shift in XIII.

For all the "playing in a tunnel" and "no story" and all it's other downfalls, I did actually enjoy XIII's battle system immensely.

Then again I enjoy any new complicated battle system once I learn to exploit it and become godly. I REALLY enjoyed Xenosaga II's battle system even though even diehard fans of the series unanimously hated II's battle system.

Hmm staggering and chaining combos... turn boosting... there are a lot of aspects in XIII that Square blatantly ripped off from the Xenosaga series now that I think about it.

Ok so now they are re-releasing two of the biggest time sink games from my teens/early 20s, and now that I have almost no time to play them, I want them both. (this and Baldurs gate enhanced)

If you tell me next that Earthbound is being re-released on PC my head may explode. Along with my marriage. LOL

The last FF I played was III on the SNES (I think its technically VI in Japan). It was perhaps the best game i played as a child. Unfortunately, Square went to Sony and I stopped there.

Is it worth it to pick up VII and play it now, some 15 years later? I hear people rave about it, but I wonder if I should leave my FF legacy at FF VI instead:p

I thought the biggest problem with Final Fantasy VII was the story. It feels too much like one of those silly animes that tries to be all deep and thoughtful, but instead of actually being deep it simply presents a nonsensical story filled with lame "twists."
