Of course. But, FFIV > FFVI and FFVII.

Again, while fun that story was all over the place. I think a big reason why I have a somewhat poor opinion of the game is that the US version had such major changes to it from the Japanese version. Maybe if they didn't make those changes the story would have made more sense.

Am I the only one who really thinks FFVIII was the best? Squall > Cloud (Although I have no idea what Riona saw in him...)

FF1 had pretty much no story. I far prefered Dragon Warrior 1, but I played both multiple times over so I did enjoy both.

I thought 8 was the worst of the games I was able to complete. The mini games were fun, but the story was so over the top dramatic, that I felt dirty playing the game. It felt like playing a chick flick.

No updated graphics, seems like a pretty much blantent money grab.

I don't get why they don't do the complete graphic overhaul for the PS3, the market is there for it.

You had much better games growing up. All the people defending FF7 are old farts, and to them FF7 was the best thing ever from their childhood.

So in a sense, they're defending their dear childhood memories more so than the game.

In comparison to modern iterations of JRPG, FF7 is total crap. :D

You are either speaking from ignorance or trying to cause a stir, but a good game is one that can be replayed even years later and you still achieve a good level of enjoyment. Those that stand the test of time will be great, even later down the road. How good they are in comparison to another game is irrelevant. If I have $100 and you have $150, it doesn't make my $100 worthless. In other words, a game being "better" than another game doesn't somehow make the other game worse.

This. The story sucked ass and the main character was completely unlikable. Emos probably loved it but any normal person hates it.

Most of the dialogue consists of

"..."

and

"... whatever."

And did I mention the draw system was COMPLETE ass?

Lol. Yeah it was like that at first, then he eventually seemed to care without a reason to other than the others egging him on. Still, I didn't think it was terrible.

FF7 was the first FF I played as a real "gamer". I remember playing FF1 on my brother's NES and I remember renting FF2/4 and spending all weekend playing up to the moon several times, but I never really felt pulled into the story until FF7. I loved it at the time and I spent easily over 100 hours on it. I bought the guide at some point and I'd spend hours reading it.

I actually finished Dragon Warrior 1-4 as a kid on the NES and I think I enjoyed them a lot more than FF1. I loved the grind to buy the best new weapon in each town, killing the new color of slimes or wyverns.

It's blasphemous, but I haven't even played FF3/6. I enjoyed 8, 9, and 10. Skipped 11 and 12. FF13 was okay, but it lost the part I really love - getting lost in huge towns and open areas. I love exploration. I've since gone back and finished 1 and 2/4. I've played good portions of 2jp, 3jp, and 5, but haven't finished them.

that was more or less the end of any good FF game (Excepting FF9); and pretty much all of those japanese rpg were so derivative of that system that they were simply crap.

can't think of any reason to play one after that.

and wow--calling those that played FF7 old farts?

5 billion mini games and miss-able items and quests do not make a game great just because it requires you to replay.

To me, Final Fantasy IV V and VI stand the test of time as THE golden age of the Final Fantasy series. It has gone downhill since.

I wager most of the fans of Final Fantasy VII are of the ADHD Halo and Fast and Furious generation who are easily captivated and memorized by flashing blue LEDs and are too young to know how great Square truly was BEFORE FF7. It's the only thing they know and as such they have no baseline to compare it to. I've encountered at least a dozen people online who have remarked that they thought FF7 was the greatest game ever, then after playing FF6 they realized how much 7 sucked.

I don't really agree with that. To the people that post things like this:

The FFVII lovers are the "newbies" that cannot understand the greatness of the 16-bit era JRPGs. :p Not that I'm bashing them... I agree with Barfo.

x infinity

I never understood the hype over FF7.

No, the gameplay sucked. Chasing those fucking draw points all over the god damn world. Rearranging your junctioning every time you get a new spell. Getting weaker every time you cast a fucking spell. That shit was PAINFUL!
And Squall was the start of their whole whiny emo child bullshit which has since not stopped. It marked the beginning of the end for me.
FF9 was a return to form but by then I no longer cared.
FFX-2 was neat with the jobs system returning but being chick based kinda irritated me.
FF12 was just plain awful. They wanted to make a hackNslash but didnt know what the hell they were doing.

I never played FF9, couldn't finish the turd that is 8. But played FF1 to 10-X2 plus whatever number the 2nd one on PS2 was after X-12.

I played the earlier FF's on NES, GBA and emulators. Ditto for the Dragon Warriors.

I don't see why people are attacking FF7, it's a great game. I think it gets so much attention is the fact it was the first mass market game on CD media. It broke the bounders typically restraining RPG's due to memory limitiations associated with cartridge. It had cut scenes at the time which were mind blowing and had these OMG summons.

I think it's just a matter of personal preference on which game someone likes. I can't say myself if I played FF7 at the same age as FF2 and 3 on SNES if I would have thought the same of all the story lines. I still remember being livid at Kain for his double crosses and hating that little twister fucker Kefka. I never had such emtions for characters in a story line as these games had, but I can't say with 100% certainty it was the game, my age or a combination of both.

You think FF12 was an attempt to become a hack and slash?

If you're 20+ and play video game, you're an old fart, without realizing it.

I got close to finishing the game about 13 or 14 years ago when it was on PC. Don't know why I stopped playing it. Perhaps I'll finish it with the rerelase.

Its not an age thing. I was probably 14-15 when I played FF4, 16-17 or so FF6. 18+ FF7 and hated it despite eagerly anticipating and preordering. My taste for Square began to sour at that point.

Xenogears was a game I should have played at 18 and had nostalgia for as well. But I never played until recently at like 30 and I was completely floored. To be as profoundly affected as I was by an old outdated game like Xenogears for the first time at age 30 in this current generation of PS3s and 360s I can truthfully say it has absolutely nothing to do with age, tastes changing, rose colored glasses of youth, or nostalgia. Im the same gamer with the same tastes and expectations as I ever had. Today's games truly do suck by comparison.

Unfortunately Xenogears raised the bar for me to an unprecedented level far beyond what previously set by FF4 and FF6 and nothing else will ever have a chance for a fair comparison. Scratch that, Xenogears flat out BROKE the bar for me.

"It appeared to be the central hull of a colossal spacecraft...." those words still make the hairs on my back stand up and send warm chills down my spine.

I want quality games again. Moon, answer our wish!

Again, one item being of greater value or better than another does not decrease the quality of the other. Simply one's desire for that item.

In the end it is realistically the only thing that might matter to someone, but the ignorance runs rampant at that point. If they like the game PRIOR to playing another, then possibly it is the taste of that person that sucked. Get off your high horses.

4 and 6 are still my favorite. 7 is the last one I liked, even though it was flawed.
Too many stupid side things that were unrelated to anything. Especially that damn battle arena and arcade. Gotta build up those stupid points just to get items necessary for beating the game. Grinding away for weeks on a chocobo that doesnt actually do anything except get you access to ONE SINGLE ITEM! Then you gotta breed and race again. One more item. And WAY too much story. You could go an hour at a time without battle. Also the linking of materia to people at random meant your guys were very bland & not unique in combat. 3 guys in combat kinda sucked too.
But even with all that, I still basically liked it.

Just tried getting the original Windows version working under XP and it crashed my system. I'd pay for an updated version that worked on modern OS's, even if they didnt improve the graphics or anything.

i beat the game without omnislash or KotR. but then again, i didn't beat any of the weapons except the easiest one :(
