why the hell do people keep playing that game? it isn't the best final fantasy game, nor is it the second best. at most it's the 3rd best FF game, and i'm not sure that it's better than 9.

Which are your favorites then? My favorite is FF1, strangely enough, followed by FF6.

FF1 is my fav also. They should redo that one for one of the newer consoles or something, but don't go overboard with it. just update the graphics a little bit and allow more than 4 characters for names.

Actually, they did update FF1 sorta...it's on GBA called Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls or something like that. Basically it's FF1 in FF2 (Jap 4) graphics/interface. It's definitely a lot nicer than the original NES one.

see, you're a noob, and so your opinion doesn't count. because FF4 and 6 will never have had the impact on you that they had on people who played them when they were new. 4 in particular was so much more advanced than anything that came before it in terms of plot and character development. going from NES RPGs to SNES RPGs was simply incredible. FF7 merely builds upon 4, rather than remaking the genre (as 4 did).

Relax man...I've played FF1, 2 (jap4), 3 (jap6), VII, IX, X, and bits of some of the non-US ones and though I think US-FF2 and US-FF3 are the best, VII is still an amazing game nearly on par with 2/3. It was the first 3D FF game and it introduced a whole new level of eye candy. The story/chars were really good too.

As much as I loathe thinking about giving Sony any of my money, I'd shell out if it was completely redone with updated graphics in a completely 3D world and the cutscenes were in at least 720p quality.

Same here.

maybe because you are going off on someones opinion on a game? you are dismissing what they have to say because they may not have as much experience as you?

I've played nearly all FF's, including all SNES -> PS2 titles (never finished on NES), at the time of their original release dates.

That said, FF7 is my favorite (though runs below Chrono Trigger), and a remake is the only way I'm buying a PS3 before a major price cut.

Is it an original copy? Sealed? Those are supposed to be quite hard to comeby and definitely worth a lot of money.

Yeah...I'm a noob to RPGs.

Final Fantasy 6,7,9,10 completed. Playing through 8 and 10-2 currently.
Almost through Xenosaga I and plan to complete II as soon as I is through.
Chrono Trigger on SNES - completed every ending (excellent RPG).
Grandia II completed.
Golden Sun I and II on Gameboy SP completed.
Diablo I and II + expansions completed.
Warcraft III + Frozen Throne (ok, this is RTS but there was a RPG downloadable content pack)

Playing through Oblivion currently (beautiful, immersive, and good story).

FF7 > FF*.

I've played EVERY Americanized Final Fantasy game that came out for NES, SNES, and PS.. FF7 is without a doubt the best of the bunch with FF3 a close #2. All I can say about my reasoning is this: to me, FF7 had the best story and music then the others (I can't understand why people think it's music was sub-par), I also really enjoyed the magic system with Materia's, the Chocobo races and breeding system was very neat I thought, the Golden Saucer and it's mini-games were all pretty new and amazing as well, but finally.. the characters were perfect for the story and it was easy to get emotionally attached to them, especially Cloud after Aeris dies. Sephiroth also was a great villian, probably not as monsterous as Kefka but evil enough for what he does throughout the game.

Ranking each game aside, I'm just amazed how Squaresoft can continually come out with a blockbuster game each time a new system is introduced. FF3 for SNES was amazing and was so much fun to play, FF7 for PS1 was revolutionary and an amazing graphical achivement, FFX for PS2 was just as revolutionary as the others, and didn't seem to lose the true spirit of RPG's after adding so much eye-candy. I don't know what exactly Square has in mind for FFXIII for the PS3, but if history is an indicator it should be a good one.

FF3 for SNES = FF6 Japan...and yes it was excellent.

Also, by the time I've finished all the previously mentioned games, perhaps they'll have a $200 slim version of the PS3 by then :).

Oh absolutely, FF3 might have been the only one in the series that I played for more than 99:99 hours because there was so much to do and see.

I would also agree that FFVII is my favorite. I also started playing the series on the Playstation. I never had the opportunity to play FF on the NES or SNES.

When I first saw the remade opening scene on IGN for FFVII I was impressed. I have no intentions of buying a PS3 on launch day. The one thing that could change my mind is if they did a complete overhaul on FFVII.

so hold up ... people are really getting excited about shelling out $600 for a PS3 and $70 - $80 for a 10 year old game (or so) that they have already played through?

hmmm ... i guess I just don't see the appeal.

no, that was a statement of fact. he IS a newb in regards to FF games because the first one he played was from 1997 or so. that's a decade (give or take a year) in. i don't see how that is arguable at all. whereas your entire post consisted of:
see, you're an elitist snob, and your opinion doesn't count.

See how easy that works?
which just smacks of trolling. just because others share your opinion doesn't make it any less of a personal attack.

Ugh... I thought FF6 was the beginning of the end for my enjoyment of the FF series. With the introduction of espers (or was it materia? I forget) basically anyone in your party could be a mage. I really missed the true class/job systems of the older FF games. Though I guess FFV with its ability to let your character change jobs sort of created the same effect. But I played FF6 before FFV. FF2 US was my favorite.

Already done for the GBA w/ FF IV quality graphics, but they made it easier also. Also done for PS1 I believe.

it was espers, and that's the reason i put 6 behind 2. it didn't matter who your character was, you could make him/her into an ultima casting machine. edgar was my best spell caster, yet his special attack was supposed to be those machines.

it was also annoying that the 'main' character would leave your party, and by the time she got back she was a couple levels down from the guys you'd been using.
