I had no idea that they released that. Although, I am disappointed that it isn't the same 3D version of FF4 that is on the DS.

Why?? As someone who grew up with FF 2 (yes, I still call it that) and who owns the DS version, I much prefer the look of the old sprites, just cleaned up and polished a bit. If I owned a PSP, that collection would be an absolute must-buy.

It's just more timeless...

2 > 3 > 9 ~7 > 10 > 12 > 1 > 8

I'm using the US numbers, of course.

I would have liked 12 a lot more were not for the complete raping of the battle system. Didn't finish is and most likely never will.

have not played the PS3 one, and I doubt I ever will. This was my favorite series of games anywhere since playing the first one when it was new, then the sequel of course.

from 10 on it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I think 9 is strangely ignored, as it is most similar to the classic FF--at least in art style. and, at least, is the final one with open exploration. RIP.

I agree with that ranking, though I honestly did not care for FF 9 one bit. It had some of the worst characters, villains, and plot of any of the games I can remember.

Everybody hates 8, and that was my first impression of it too when I owned it back when it was new. I got maybe 90% of the way through and just gave up. Of course, I was 14 or so at the time I don't remember it all that well, so I've been thinking about replaying it with an open mind.

I just order FF4 Complete Collection for PSP last night. I'm excited to finally beat the game. I always get to the moon and then quit.

Since you are a fan of FF have you tried any of the Dragon Quest games? I too like FF but I find a lot of them hard to get into for the stories and or characters are just too emo. I've gotten to really like the Dragon Quest series though.

I own the DS version as well, and I also played it back on the SNES when it came out, but when it comes to a 2D re-release, it feels like I'm paying even more money for almost the same thing. At least when it gets redone in 3D, you're paying money for a significant amount of graphical and coding rework.

In other words, I feel gypped.

I disagree with this a bit, because in my experience... girls that play Final Fantasy games love Final Fantasy 8. If I ever run into a profile on a dating site where the girl talks about playing Final Fantasy, I almost always ask them what their favorite is. I usually hear that they love 8 and really like 7 and 10. Final Fantasy 8 pretty much is The Notebook of Final Fantasy games.

I don't think I've ever met a female who has even played a Final Fantasy that's older than 7.

I guess because out of all of the FFs, it's supposed to be a love story? All the FFs have some romance elements, but FF8 IIRC went out of its way to be the real love story of the bunch.
Heck, even the game's logo reinforces it.

ff8 was good, and ff9 was amazing. im surprised a lot of folks didnt like that one

as for DQ, my first exposure to it was the first one on NES, which was ok. but Dragon Quest VII is an unbelievably greT RPG. pick it up if u havent played it yet. well worth it imo

Will do thanks. Funny it's the next in the series for me to play. I've played the 4-6 3D remakes on my DS and loved these. Also played 9 on DS and like it a lot. I hear 8 is supposed to be really good as well. I think the next thing I'm going to do is play the port of Chrono Trigger on my DS. LOVE that game.

actually, i meant Dragon Quest VIII, not VII. 8 looks and plays so well, it can pass for a ps3 game

Which was the one on the NES that you played? Cause the remakes that I played on the 3DS and liked a lot were just remakes of the NES ones.

of course. I only ever picked up FF after loving Dragon Warrior on NES (the US version of Dragon Quest.) at the time, of course, Enix was independent and made DQ, Square = FF.

I played all the NES versions (through DW 3, I think). They were a bit different, and much more difficult. FF1 was pretty hard, though.

I never really picked up another DQ game until X? whichever one was released on PS2 not too many years ago. It was quite good. You could really slutify that one girl in your party, lol.

I think that was VIII. If you have a DS or 3DS you should pick up the remakes of IV-VI, very nice trilogy of games.

What I liked so much about 9 more than anything else was the setting and the design. It was less emo than those of its generation, but I agree that the story wasn't compelling and the characters were completely uninteresting. Something about seeing that black wizard, though, just made me so happy. It was the last great battle system (though I actually liked the FF10 system quite a bit. That, and Auron, were the only things I liked about that game).

And, actually I enjoyed FF 8 a lot during the first playthrough, but somewhere near ~70% into it, the whole story fell to pieces. It became so riddled with massive, glaring plot holes, contradictions, and confounding insanity (like MGS 2) that I simply stopped paying attention. Only finished it to finish it. It was the first FF that I could never finish a 2nd time. ...that says a lot for me, back in the day. 😛 The weird thing, I either like or dislike the magic binding system. It was unique, way too much of a grind, but at times I really like it. Problem is, it made you not want to use magic.

I used to never be able to finish these games cause I didn't understand the amount of grinding that was required. I'd get to the final boss or close to him and find myself FAR FAR underleveled to possibly hope of defeating him. In recent years I've picked up more and more JRPGs and now that I'm more patient than I was in my youth I've come to really love most of them. Often it means 10 or 20+ hours of level grinding but I've come to love that too 😛

I'm just about to start chrono trigger again!!

yeah, I think that's it. It's remarkably deep (content wise) and has great character balance and differentiation. I don't think I have it anymore, though.... :hmm:

as much as I love FF7, the problem is that if you go far enough, every character becomes the exact same. There is no real customization that makes them unique near end game, as you essentially quip them with whatever magic you want, giving them the same exact strengths. the only real difference is the animations for their limit breaks--all of which just do damage, anyway.

same with FF10--once you get characters through the complete path of their individual sphere grid, you end up creating complete clones of each other.

This is why I still hold FF2 to be the absolute best--very real character differentiation and strategy. FF3 is great because you have more choice with how you create your party, though Espers have some effect of making them more similar amongst each other. Also....I tend to dislike that much choice in such story driven games. I kind of like the game choosing who I have to play with, as it keeps the story more cohesive.

I'll admit, as lame as sounds, one of my happiest gaming moments was when
Rydia randomly returns in the dwarf castle and whoops ass on Golbez and his dragons and she's all growed-up and uber-powerful.
sue me--I was 13! 😛

possibly b/c of FF1, which absolutely required serious level-grinding to get anywhere, I didn't have much problem with 2. Still, lots of grinding but a good bit less, and it, along with 7, remain the 2 FF games where I maxed all characters out to level 99.

they are obviously godly in FF7 at that point, and it's no joke in FF2 at level 99, either. They could take out zeromus or whatever with little to no problem. lol, I think I remember some of those uber insane random encounters in the final level running away from my party. 😀

As much as I love Square from those days...I still have never played Chrono Trigger. :hmm:

What about FF 12? I haven't actually played many of the old school ones but what I did play of 12 I liked.

that's the last one for PS2, right? I think I already mentioned how much I loathed that one.

primarily due to the inexcusable rape of the entire battle system. Fuck that game, I never could finish it. and it seems the later games pretty much follow the same system, right?

do not want.

Blasphemer! My eyes! My eyes!

You really should play it. You are missing out!

I tried emulating it not too long ago, but the rom I had froze up somewhere near the beginning. It was released at a time when I was away from video games, I think, so I missed out.

I loved Secret of Mana, though. Got that on release.

another SNES game that liked--Wanderers from Ys, and also the Dragon's....dragon... :hmm: shit, what were those games called? Dragon breath? Capcom made them, I think.
