"Filmed in front of a live studio audience..."

I think that "live look" you're referring to is what you get with a traditional, multi-camera sitcom; not really related to whether or not there's a live audience. Single-camera sitcoms are becoming more common now (The Office, Always Sunny, 30 Rock). The Big Bang Theory is a current multi-camera sitcom that I think has that "look" that you're referring to.

seinfeld? didn't they have an audience?

nope. You can't tell that it's canned laughter?

nah dude. I remember watching some behind the scenes show on E! or something and it was most def in front of an audience.

Canned or not, it was still in front of people.

On one of the special features on the DVDs, I think Larry David said they had to ask the audience to stop applauding when Kramer entered Jerry's apartment because it took too much time and threw off the tempo of the scene.

interesting. I haven't noticed a single episode where the audience track isn't canned, but this makes sense. To me, it was the Kramer entrances where it is most obvious--what with the sudden and then short reaction. Always seemed forced and blatant to me.

Suddenly Susan did (because I went to a taping). Kathy Griffin was pretty good, everyone else was meh. It was kinda lame though, they "encouraged" laughing by giving prizes to people who laughed the most. No, I didn't get one.

The only really interesting thing about that night was the ride home. After our ride bailed I took the train with some (equally white) friends from Burbank back down to Long Beach, going through Watts and Compton at some ungodly hour.

Totally not worth it.

Friends?

 Friends. There are a bunch of clips on the DVDs of the audience and the setup. The gag reals are pretty funny as well.

Ugg, Friends is so annoying. One of the mst female shows ever on tv.

this.

That 70's show did as well.

They didn't have that live look though. I don't know what it's called, but it's where you could almost see the set. Look at the filming difference between Night Court and Cheers for instance.

I still laugh my balls off when I think about the gag reel from the episode where they have to take a couch up the stairway.

Why is it always a live studio audience..

why do you never see "Filmed in front of a Dead studio audience" ???

It's actually funny that this is the sort of post I expect you to make. You always act like a douchebag in every thread. Like clock work.

I like the show and so do a ton of other people I know. Get over it.

If you were taping a show and there were a hundred corpses behind the camera, would you want to advertise it?

Friends seems to be almost universally hated here... I'm not entirely sure why. It's definitely not a show for women - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108778/ratings. And no guy should feel embarrassed for liking the show - I mean just look at Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox.

I wonder if age is a factor in people here hating the show? As the characters developed throughout the series, they became more and more extreme caricatures of themselves. If you didn't watch them develop gradually and just saw what they had become in the later seasons, you might find them annoying. Monica especially.

Laugh tracks are so lame. I seriously don't need a show to tell me what's funny or not.

You're more likely to laugh when other people are laughing. That's what they're going for.

When I watch a show with my wife, I laugh a lot more than if I watch it by myself.

I don't really notice the audience laughter or laugh track unless I make a point of listening for it.

would get a bit sticky, and i am sure that the dead audience would be so bored by the crap shows mentioned above, they would become flesh eating zombies. (as opposed to brain eating zombies, there is no brains to feed on from people in these shows)

I mean, hey, The View has had some hotties on it in the past, that means it's cool for a guy to watch, right? 😀
