File System

Probably NTFS, although they promised us WinFS.

NTFS is the native file system. WinFS is an indexing file system built ontop of NTFS and it's been postponed until after Vista ships.

NTFS, and there is no option to use anything else currently. And I hope it stays that way. FAT32 is horrifically obsolete.

Will there still be FAT and FAT32 support for removable media? I would imagine so, but just wanted to check since I have a few digital cameras that this would be important for... 😉

I haven't tested that, but I'm almost positive there is. NTFS does not work well with removable media.

Just to clarify to my first post, I was referring to the Vista installer having no option to specify a file system.

It does work with removeable fat32 devices. I've used my 60 gig usb drive to put drivers on it as well as a usb key.

Right, I have no problems with trying to wean people off of an outdated, less reliable, and less secure filesystem, though I would still like to have support for it in case one needs other drives, partitions, or removable media to be FAT for compatibility. I highly doubt that you all would take that away, as all digital cameras aren't going to switch to NTFS overnight even if it did work well on removable media... 😉

Edit: didn't see previous post. Thanks for the info, ND40oz!

I really doubt all camera manufacturers are going to pay MS royalties just to use NTFS on their media.

Microsoft already tried to get royalties from them for FAT16/32. Time to invent an open source CFS - Camera File System. Or PFS - Portable File System.

I didn't mean you couldn't format removeable media with NTFS. It's just that current implementation can be very risky to your data if you use quick removal (yank your USB stick out).

Removeable media that is formatted with NTFS should be ejected using the dialog to prevent corruption.

No need, the MS fat patents were recently revoked...

I have a Firewire Drive and a thumb drive connected to my machine, while Vista is running. Both are FAT32, and are recognizable, and useable, by Vista.

As was already stated, NTFS is the native file system for Vista.
