Who watched ladies figure skating last night? If you were watching, you probably noticed the coverage was all about the 3 white blonde girls, while the Asian girl hardly got a mention, despite being in 3rd place after the short skate.

Well, the Asian girl upset the natural order of things by skating near perfectly, while the favorite Ashely Wagner choked and fell twice, coming in 4th. Results were like this:

1. Gracie Gold
2. Polina Edmunds
3. Mirai Nagasu

4. Ashley Wagner

So, there are 3 open spots for the Sochi Olympics and you would think these top finishers earned the right to go, yes? Nope. Today they decided to bump Mirai Nagasu and send Wagner. They bump the one Asian girl and send the 3 white blonde girls. Anyone else think that's messed up?

"This competition is not the only event that USFS considers in selecting the team," St. Peter said. "It's the results and participation in events over the course of the past year-plus. So if you look at Ashley Wagner's record and performance, she's got the top credentials of any of our female athletes."

After finishing fourth in the Vancouver Olympics, Nagasu's career went south. At 20, she entered nationals as an afterthought, years removed from all that promise and that little girl from ages ago who won gold at the 2008 U.S. championships when just 14. After the Vancouver Olympics, she missed making the worlds teams the past three years.

Sounds like Nagasu has sucked ass since 2008. Racism not found, crappy athlete that got lucky in one event is though.

Last Olympics Wagner also finished 4th in the US championship and got left out. Of course they started changing their stance on this since then, just in case Wagner choked again and they needed to bail her out.

After finishing fourth in the Vancouver Olympics, Nagasu's career went south. This is BS. They make is sound as if Nagasu is washed up, when it's Wagner that is 22 years old and can't keep up with the younger competition, especially in technical ability and jumping. Nagasu is a proven skater just like Wagner. She was in the Vancouver Olympics and placed 4th, and many said she was underscored and should have been higher.

Missing the last three world teams doesn't mean much if it's also a subjective selection like this one.

These types of subjective selections are more susceptible to white privilege. Hopefully an investigation is done and the harshest punishments levied if this is a gross abuse of white privilege.

Look up Michelle Kwan.

Edit: they go by the skater's history, especially the last year in total, not just one exceptional performance.

This is why I don't watch IceSkating. Even the judging sometimes can be political baloney. Apparently it is now even in the selection for the Olympics.

After comparing the two using wiki, I would have taken Wagner too. She wins more often that Nagasu. Sorry, but Wagner has the better overall career than Nagasu.

I disagree. Wagner has always been a mediocre talent who relied on her 'artistry' because she is a weak jumper. When it really counted, she choked... twice. She will not get any medals at the Olympics.

Anyway, even if you insist on choosing Wagner based on her experience and past performance, by the same criteria they should have chosen Nagasu, who has competed for 4th place in Olympics games, over the 15-year old Polina Edmunds, a young skater with only junior experience before this.

If you look at where each skater placed in competitions from 10-11 till now, Wagner shits on Nagasu. Nagasu might show up and do decent in a competition here and there but she is not as consistent.

EDIT: Wagner did bad in one competition compared to Nagasu who's been bad in multiple competitions.

And Kristi Yamaguchi. If they were going for appearance, I don't think anyone would suggest the bean pole on the left.

As the announcer said during the broadcast, "you never know which Marai will show up", and that's an issue with consistency.

The real reason is that Wagner is the media darling, and NBC probably had all sorts of coverage prepared for her.

Wagner has also been heavily promoted by the skating association and NBC, which will broadcast the Sochi Games. With Lindsey Vonn out of the skiing competition with an injury, an absent Wagner would have left the United States — and the network — without another visible star and medal hopeful.
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/13/sports/olympics/klutz-over-lutz-wagner-stumbles-to-olympic-skating-berth.html?ribbon-ad-idx=4&rref=sports/olympics&module=Ribbon&version=context&region=Header&action=click&contentCollection=Olympics&pgtype=article

Wagner will not have much shot at an Olympic medal, though. Her technical skills are not up to par with the international competition.
Unlike Gold and Edmunds, Wagner did not complete a triple-triple combination jump in either the short or long program here, the minimum required to have any shot at a medal in Sochi.

How was the coverage by media in Asia?

They bump the one Asian girl and send the 3 white blonde girls.

How many white blonde girls are on the teams from China, Korea, and Japan? Oh, zero? Interesting.

So let me get this straight... people tend to care more about, and be more interested in people who are more closely related to them genetically? What a revelation... it's almost like that's... programmed into us... by nature. Odd.

Well, good thing it's only messed up and racist when whites act on this deep rooted biological instinct. If we considered it racist and messed up for everyone to act like that, worldwide, the political correctness brigade would certainly have their work cut out for them!

Why would that be interesting? How many white, blonde, female Chinese, Korean and Japanese do you think happen to actually exist?

[edit to add this]

In comparison, the number of Asian Americans in the US numbered 18,205,898 (2011). Guess that means you're looking at roughly 9 million female Asian Americans of various ages.

Now, why was that "interesting" again?

I just find it amusing/interesting that the one culture which is really making any serious effort at diversity still gets taken to task endlessly for not doing enough, when other cultures are doing damn near nothing.

Once again: How many white, blonde, female Chinese, Korean and Japanese do you think happen to actually exist?
