Fight Science
Preview

For the first time, "Fight Science" brings together members of the crash-test industry, the sports biomechanics industry, and the Hollywood animation industry?applying their combined expertise and technology to a diverse range of martial arts techniques, including karate, kung fu, jiu jitsu, tae kwon do, muay Thai, and wushu, among others. The results reveal the comparative strengths, advantages, and limitations of the various martial arts styles. And in a breakthrough combination of technologies, scientists are able to peer inside a fighter's body in real time.

Wish I had the National Geographic Channel. This airs on August 20th, 9PM ET/PT.

I've seen this on one of my HD channels already......not sure if it was HDNet, PBS, or Discovery.....but I was absolutely glued to it.

I don't remember it being called this, but it may have been, but it was the exact same stuff with all of the effects and weapons and most of those people look familiar.

Since these are all "world champion martial arts masters" I'm going to lose a lot of respect for the program if they don't show some top MMA fighters as well.

That was an awesome show. I loved how they basically praised NINJAS to be the best.

...well they didn't really, but they started talking about "ultimate warriors" directly after showing how the Ninjas can do so many things so well, so the contexts kinda got meshed together.

I don't consider MMA fighters as a general rule to be Martial Arts Masters. They are great fighters and in a no rules (or at least very few) such as the Ultimate Fighter fight would probably beat most if not all of those masters. But by its very nature MMA makes you a jack of all trades and a master of none. I saw the show it was very good.
The thing, I think, that suprised me the most was that the Ninja had so much more balance than the other fighters (at least the ones they showed)

what I didnt like is how they mentioned that a bigger person will create a bigger punch and then they just say that kung fu was the weakest punch, while the guy was 130lb (600lb force) and the boxer guy was like 210+lb (993lb force, strongest punch). Of course a bigger guy is going to punch harder..

Haha...yeah, both my wife and I were commenting on that the other night.

The tests were very subjective because of the different sizes of the fighters. It spoke more to the individual than the style.

Still, the bit on the two brothers that were breaking concrete slabs and whatnot with their bodies was pretty amazing.

If you divide those into force/lb(whatever), the boxer does more force for each pound that he weighs. Dunno if thats a valid measurement though :\

It's the person that makes the fighter, not the style. It is how you train and how you are built.
I thought the show was a joke.

It doesn't matter what you train, a martial art is not going to make you super human. You are still bound by your physical limitations. The only real way to test this is with clones all trained in different martial arts. Otherwise there is no way to remove the human error.

Or put them all in mortal combat!!!!

Two words...Bob Sapp. They need to show him hitting something, and it breaking into a billion pieces...like somebody's face.
